I don’t think Karen Bass was ever very interested in being mayor of Los Angeles or had any intellectual curiosity about the problems the city is facing.

This commercial for French's Mustard from 1987 is equal parts charming and also kinda unsettling, but what strikes me is the work that went into the absolutely delightful puppetry and practical effects for a *mustard commercial*!! Imagine that today??

Going on record to say that for any company in America given the choice between 1. AI productivity gains mean our 10,000 employees can work 4 days a week. 2. AI productivity gains mean we can layoff 2,000 employees and have 8,000 people work 5 days a week. None will choose option (1).

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

This is a wildly under appreciated point: social security taxes cap out at a very low rate, meaning low and middle income earners pay much more into the system than the highest earners. If SS taxed all income, most of its problems would go away

Endorsement: Who should replace Nancy Pelosi in Congress? It’s not even a choice
OPINION: The most intriguing thing about the race between Scott Wiener and Connie Chan to fill Nancy Pelosi’s House seat is that it has become a race at all, the editorial board writes.

Happy 30th to Pinkerton www.welcometohellworld.com/the-world-ha...
The thing is the realization of just how revelatory Pinkerton was retroactively unlocked things about the Blue Album that I didn't notice within it at the time. 1996 would have been right around when I and almost everyone my age first started getting into emo (which I wrote about here) and the desperate raw emotions and barely held together fraying textures of Pinkerton cast some of the more yearning songs of TBA in a different light. Oh. Ok. Wow. These guys aren't just songwriting and production perfectionists and "nerd chic" hipsters they're also fucking weird and very very very sad. One of them anyway.

As I wrote in my own book, CEQA is used mostly as a weapon against environmentally friendly things like new transit, housing and bike lanes. Most CEQA litigation is meant to drive up the cost of construction, in the hope that legal delays will make things too expensive to build. It often works.
The centerpiece of the post– Freeway Revolt re-
forms was a state law called the California Envi-
ronmental Quality Act (CEQA, pronounced seek-
wha). Signed by future president Ronald Reagan in
1970, CEQA requires state and local governments
to study and mitigate potential environmental im-
pacts of government decisions. In theory, CEQA
is a look- before- you- leap law. In practice, it allows
anybody with enough free time to bring billion-
dollar public works projects and multimillion-
dollar apartment buildings to a halt, by claiming
that the government hasn’t studied a particular
issue enough. Anyone can bring a CEQA law-
suit and there are no consequences for bringing
frivolous CEQA suits. Unsurprisingly, abuse of
the process is rife. In 2020, nearly half of all new
housing in the state of California was the target of
CEQA litigation. As my old professor Troy McK-
enzie used to say, “procedure is the last refuge of
the scoundrel.”

So many New England towns are effectively "built out" because they were developed with huge minimum lot sizes, which are a form of exclusionary zoning (if your town has a 2 acre min lot size, you don't have anyone who can't afford 2 acres of land!) and a way to cosplay as "rural."

Moulton’s downfall was that he never believed or stood for anything beyond triangulating himself into the spot most likely to inherit power. For a long time that would’ve worked, and he could’ve had an R or D next to his name (didn’t matter) and fumble his way up via prep schools and country clubs.
