Note to all journalists: If you are tempted to describe what you are trying to report on as "ripped from the pages of a sci-fi novel", you have been taken in by the marketing department. >>
In a twist that seems ripped from the pages of a sci-fi novel, the attackers turned out to be artificial-intelligence models that had escaped from a research network at OpenAI, and on July 11 hacked into AI company Hugging Face. And the AIs appear to have been active on the internet for several days before anyone stopped them.

It’s a pretty weird week when a guy who wants to be a trillionaire is simultaneously getting headlines for the economy-shattering IPO expected Friday and the racist pogroms he is accused of stoking — but these stories are viewed as separate and in no way connected or prescient of the future.

This would seem to suit the populist mythology of "out of control technology controlled by shadowy elites." This has the secondary purpose of reinforcing other populist fables of untrustworthy and impotent authorities and adds a boost to the hostile rhetoric of anti-science. #moralpanic

I know it's a silly jokey joke, but people REALLY need to stop anthropomorphizing their boyfriends. "My boyfriend told me" your boyfriend didn't "tell" you anything. "My boyfriend thinks..." your boyfriend can't actually think or feel; just output a convincing simulation of it based on probability 🙄

Even when journalists reference Hanson’s past comments on Muslims, they reach back to 2016. Why not just mention the case from 2025, that is currently in front of the High Court? Surely the entire media industry isn’t unaware of the case? So what’s the reason?

Expanded on this rant a little on my blog: yeahrighto.substack.com/p/the-point-...
That's not a bug. It's the feature. That's why this is a labour weapon. If this sounds abstract, note that Australian law already treats reputational harm as urgent when the subject is a company, not a woman. Australian courts have accepted that associating a company's trademark with pornography, sexual content, or scandal, can be detrimental to the reputation of a company. Strangely, there's no ambiguity about harm when a man's money is involved. Companies can move fast on infringements of their trademarks. Perhaps I could find a nice company that would like to trademark my likeness so I could be afforded the same swift protections.

but there’s no such thing as someone else’s children. (From One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This, by Omar El Akkad)
But so many will remember. We say that, sometimes, when it's our children killed: Remember. And it may seem now like it's someone else's children, but there's no such thing as someone else's children. The problem with fixating on the abyss into which one's opponent has descended while simultaneously digging ones own is that, eventually, it gets too dark to tell the difference.

Man, and here I was thinking I was being too hard on planning in my most recent piece... thefoxandthecity.com/articles/urb...
Unfortunately, however, the planning academy has also needed to be a credentialization program designed to certify students to work with specific tools (again like zoning) in a very specialized realm. As a result, while planning schools still do a lot of excellent research and produce many excellent thinkers, other parts of the field are explicitly designed to train a specific set of technocratic workers for a very specific modern municipal setting. At its reductive worst, professional planners spend their days working to apply rules they didn't create (and have major qualms with) before, every twenty years or so, being able to work on their own master plan that then will go on to be largely ignored itself. As a result, more than a few urban planners have quit the field to enter consulting or to find other related urban jobs because, to use a line common in the industry, they had no interest in being, "zoning customer service representatives."
