Had 2 FOIs rejected by the Attorney-General's Dept under the rarely used s26(2) - all docs totally exempt from FOI. The docs relate to interference by the former AG, on two seperate occasions, in the appointment process for NACC Dep Com positions. Have appealed both decisions.

For most people's lives, how many use cases are there really for a technology that can find patterns in very large datasets? I would suggest pretty much none. Granted AI probably has some decent use cases for certain specialised research tasks, and it's probably more useful than blockchain 🤷‍♂️

The insufficient growth of renewable energy in Australia is was bad before the data centre boom, but that insufficiency persists even as the target finish line moves further and further away as projected demand grows.

New capacity required to meet 2030 targets (gigawatts): wind about 2 GW under construction versus ~18 GW required, solar about 3–4 GW under construction versus ~22 GW required.

Be helpful if ecologists and would be environmentalists stopped talking about natural "carbon sinks" as if they were relevant for climate policy. AGW is primarily driven by the ≈40bt of fossil carbon being released into the atmosphere so that's the main game. Biodiversity policy is something else.

I don't know if anyone cares, but Victoria's proposed rules do not "force datacentres to use renewable energy", and falsely stating that they do is actively helping the data centre industry do the pretend-fainting shock performance they're doing to try and kill even the weakest of regulations

But the peak body for datacentres has made no secret of its disappointment. It warns the new rules, which also force datacentres to use renewable energy, could cause investment to flow to other states.
