Man, after a few days of riding the Dutch railway network, I'm spoiled. Universal tap in / tap out with contactless payment, electrified with fast speeds and fast acceleration, and hop on frequent train services travelling all over the country. If only the Northeast Corridor worked like this!

Walking through Amsterdam, I was at first confused about what these structures were... until I saw a car pull into one. It's an automated underground parking garage. I knew these existed, but had never seen them before. Very cool in a sci-fi/engineering way, but not exactly a great use of money.

A recent trip to the National Gallery of Art, in DC (but not on Bluesky) reminded us of great scenes of transit and urban venues depicted in art. One of our faves is John Sloan's 1922 "New York City From Greenwich Village" that features the @mta.info subway.

The excuse for not originally connecting to the uptown platform was blamed on poor signal locations. I'm not totally sure why, but I'd imagine that the block signal system had its blocks located in such a way that it would be hard to locate the train further south.

It's slightly more complicated for freight, but this is something I've been seeing around the BQE. It's not clear how much of the truck traffic that often gets mentioned is actually local O&D or could find another route. Without the highway, even truck traffic would adjust to a new equilibrium.
