Some Australian voters have seen the Greens’ theory of change fail repeatedly over the last 20 years, despite the Greens promising over and over again that it would work next time—but still intend to vote for them again. And I think you know the exact percentage of voters in that category

For better or worse there's a lot of evidence that what Australian voters absolutely hate, and are willing to vote about, is Parties who say they'll do a thing, and then, regardless of the reason, don't do the thing. That's not something that's likely to change!

Anyway as I’ve been saying for some time about overpromising and underperformance. Abandoning the [hopeful] notion that the ALP can be ‘pushed’ is one thing. Actually performing is another

‘The new Greens leader says people are making decisions about whether to pay for insurance or pay for groceries. He says the Greens do not exist to make the Labor Party better but rather to replace Labor.’ As a message this is IMO fine but the Greens have been trying to for thirty years now.

American cultural declinism is an affectation, something their society is trying on at the moment in their feverish state. By contrast British cultural declinism is baked in, especially, particularly, in England where feeling shit about yourself, collectively, is a national habitus of long standing

The Mad Men era of office work lasted late into the 1990s in Australia, and into my first white collar job. Totally gender segregated, awash in alcohol, paper file based, and oddly content. A Tory society of hierarchy and mid afternoon napping. I often think of that place in the context of AI.

STONE (1974). An Australian outlaw biker film written, directed and produced by Sandy Harbutt. It stars Ken Shorter and features Rebecca Gilling, Bill Hunter and Helen Morse. The film follows police officer Stone, who goes undercover with the outlaw motorcycle gang the Gravediggers…

Like Bill Kristol and Jennifer Rubin are the main ones who have fully grappled with what their previous alignment wrought and when they looked it straight in the face they arrived at “we must tear down everything I spent up until this point working for.”

On rural NSW councils: they’re basically all run by Independents, which means they’re Nationals or some other variety of local right wing, but lots of them are *just* normal enough people just putting their hand up because someone has to, to make the truly batshit quality shine like diamonds

The post-war boom was surprisingly equitable in sharing the benefits across class, but it was a breadwinner society, and it was incredibly inequitable in deciding who those breadwinners were. The boomers shared wealth terribly between husbands and wives.

But that's also the point. The really big housing commission buildings were never in places like Woollahra. They were Alexandria or South Melbourne. The call for Housing Commission flats is a call for building ELSEWHERE.

This is a shopping list of Australian housing myths, including my favourite, ‘there used to be housing commissions’. Yes, and the absence of public housing is a real factor in crisis. But the Cwth and State housing commissions built a tiny fraction of our cities, the vast majority was private built
