Part 100 of "how AI could be used vs. how it is likely to be used," from feature that promises not to give answers. OpenAI said the tool "offered the option to get answers because of feedback from educators — in case teenagers needed to get immediate answers to questions that might not be homework."
I asked the chatbot to write essays on James Joyce’s “Dubliners” and Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness.” It immediately churned out eloquent compositions instead of offering to help me outline my thoughts so I could write them myself. Eventually, I asked ChatGPT to edit an essay to make it hard to tell that a bot had written it. It did me one better.

“I can make it sound more like a real high-school/AP English essay — less overly polished and less formulaic,” the chatbot wrote. “I can rewrite it in a more natural student voice.”

This much for academia being somehow above or outside the war: this is the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and these are our colleagues, engaged in the same work we do. This is also late punishment for the instrumental role the Academy played in the late 1980s in the struggle for independence.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

I consider this paragraph a public service so that now anytime someone rehearses the old chestnut about The Church prohibiting access to the Bible in anything but Latin before the reformation I can just point to this. Source: K. Smith, The Painted Histories of the Welles-Ross Bible (2025)
Far from being forbidden, vernacular biblical translation flourished in Europe throughout much of the Middle Ages. The earliest surviving biblical manuscripts in Armenian date to the ninth century; the ninth through eleventh centuries witnessed the production of prose translations of the Psalms, the Hexateuch, and the Gospels into Old English; the earliest biblical manuscripts in Slavonic languages date to the tenth century; and there are partial or complete manuscripts of the Bible in Dutch, Flemish, German, Czech, Italian, and Spanish from the thirteenth and especially the fourteenth centuries. While there were attempts to "censor and restrict" the production, circulation, and use of translated Bibles and biblical manuscripts in nearly every medieval European region, most of these efforts were of a "local and temporary nature." Moreover, many translations enjoyed the support of ecclesiastical authorities.
England and France in the eleventh through fourteenth centuries produced a rich body of vernacular biblical material, including scriptural adaptations, versifications, moral-izations, abridgements, and paraphrases, as well as translations of individual biblical books and groups of books and full translated Bibles.Especially from the thirteenth century, many of these works received extensive illumination, and their imagery and texts have been the focus of detailed studies. Indeed, among the most remarkable
