Context to Gavin Bazunu’s position: a matchday squad of 23 must be submitted to UEFA before midnight tonight, and *must* include three goalkeepers. Were he to simply refuse to play, the FAI would only be able to submit a squad if they (farcically) redesignated an outfielder as a goalkeeper.

What has emerged at a later part of the FAI press conference: Knowing the circumstances of the upcoming games, the FAI did a trawl of prospective callups and checked with abut 30 of the most likely players to ensure they were comfortable fulfilling those fixtures. Goalkeepers were not among them.

Something fitting about a newspaper columnist who is absolutely stealing a living writing the most inane dross on both sides of the Irish Sea chiding young people for their lack of work ethic. Sad news. MacKenzie was a masterful historian of many fields, including the history of Southern Africa. This was informed by personal experience. He grew up on the Zambian Copperbelt where his father was clerk of works in the colonial government.

Finished this last night and I enjoyed it more than I expected to. It's a pacy and engaging read. Strongest when discussing philosophy and radical psychiatry, weaker on Algerian history and Fanon's contemporary reception and resonances. Worth a read for anyone with an interest in his life and work.

Had lovely visit to Wexford for the home-leg launch of Siobhán Doyle's brillaint new book Irish Sport in 100 Objects. Managed to get a great swim in and do some 1798 toursim at the centre in Enniscorthy and on Vinegar Hill. Will be blasting boolavogue on the way home in the car.
