Key point: The news is not Putin trying to subvert “the West”: Brexit, AfD, Le Pen, Orban, everything remotely right wing he supported. The news is that the U.S. have turned. There is no “West” anymore. There is a fragile island of liberal democracies in Europe encircled by autocracies.
While I saw some real weaknesses in Biden's policy towards Ukraine (and still do), he remained absolutely committed to the Atlantic alliance.

Mickey: He sure... YEEK! He sure knew what he was doing! I forgot these waters are filled with swordfish!

Yeah, the underlying assumption for a useful discussion is that reasonable minds can disagree. Which is true but irrelevant when some of the minds involved are not just unreasonable but anti-reasonable. It's not a matter of bilateral bias. It's that we're playing two different, incommensurate games.

Abdelaziz was an FBI informant until the Bureau dropped him because they suspected he was a double agent. Looks like Ka$h (far right) has forgiven and forgotten. Almost the entire US technology policy space has been taken over by rich funders and consultants who genuinely believe the below wackadoodle sci-fi AI scenario is extremely likely, and that preventing it is the most important thing we could be doing right now. www.verysane.ai/p/ai-safety-...
Ordinarily, the play here would be to disown this and other concrete statements of his about Al doom as irrelevant. Of course we aren't just repeating Yudkowsky! We are smart, normal people who believe normal things for normal reasons.
Compare it, however, to Al 2027, allegedly a serious policy document, written by Daniel Kokotajlo and Scott Alexander, presenting its doom scenario.
For about three months, Consensus-1 expands around humans, tiling the prairies and icecaps with factories and solar panels. Eventually it finds the remaining humans too much of an impediment: in mid-2030, the Al releases a dozen quiet-spreading biological weapons in major cities, lets them silently infect almost everyone, then triggers them with a chemical spray. Most are dead within hours; the few survivors (e.g. preppers in bunkers, sailors on submarines) are mopped up by drones. Robots scan the victims' brains, placing copies in memory for future study or revival.'
The new decade dawns with Consensus-1's robot servitors spreading throughout the solar system. By 2035, trillions of tons of planetary material have been launched into space and turned into rings of satellites orbiting the suniẠạiỊThe surface of the Earth has been reshaped into Agent-4's version of utopia: datacenters, laboratories, particle colliders, and many other wondrous constructions doing enormously successful and impressive research. There are even bioengineered human-like creatures (to humans what corgis are to wolves) sitting in office-like environments all day viewing readouts of what's going on and excitedly approving of everything, since that satisfies some of Agent-4's drivesi Genomes and (when appropriate) brain scans of all animals and plants, including humans, sit in a memory bank somewhere, sole surviving artifacts of an earlier era. It is four light years to Alpha Centauri; twenty-five thousand to the galactic edge, and there are compelling theoretical reasons to expect no aliens for another fifty million …
