Unprecedented corruption & constitutional crimes. Again, it all should have ended in 2017, when he began openly monetizing the presidency at his hotel two blocks from the White House. We are not a serious country.

I do appreciate the honesty in this, though. 90+% of both parties’ candidates are replacement level cogs in the machine of politics. It would be better to just not have to pretend they’re individually unique. Paxton is horrifically awful, but Cornyn voted for all the far right authoritarianism, too.

The working assumption about 🇺🇸 politics needs to be that we are going to have 20-30% of voters supporting far right authoritarianism, as is now true in ~every rich democracy. We can reform our institutions to ensure the 70% can govern, or we’ll always be one election from the fascists getting 51%.

“Opposition parties do win unfair elections, & a restored US democracy will remain unconsolidated until both major parties commit to its defense” This is why we need multiparty democracy reforms. The far right authoritarian party is highly unlikely to moderate under our existing institutions.

Fortunately, nothing bad has happened in the history of economies when large-scale cross-border capital inflows come into contact with a financial system in which banks operate alongside & as part of large securities mark- 🤔🧐

Even subordinating the Senate is possible without Constitutional amendments:
- DC/PR/USVI statehood
- Enlarging the House
- MMDs
- New VRA
- Totally revamping SCOTUS: bsky.app/profile/mcop...
- Automatic universal voter registration
- Rewriting <all> the "national emergency" laws: bsky.app/profile/mcop...
- Subordinating the Senate: bsky.app/profile/mcop...
Etc.

- No clerks
- No building
- No shadow docket
- No docket control at all in fact
- No pay raises
- 25 justices
- 47 justices
- 101 justices
- Riding the circuit, preferably on horseback

"Are there problems of free speech on campus?" and "Are universities to blame for stifling free speech & causing self-censoring on campus?" are not the same question. It would be nice if FIRE & its terrible rankings would stop conflating those two questions, year after year after year after year.

I tried, years ago, to engage seriously with FIRE's director about issues like self-censoring & viewpoint diversity on campus. I predictably didn't get very far trying to explain that his arguments were fraught with selection bias & the limits of student surveys. Quite clearly he still doesn't care.

FIRE's rankings are wildly unserious & not in good faith. Yes, sure, we let Chris Rufo come to lie about higher ed & then get an F in political tolerance in allowing controversial speakers. We invite the FIRE director himself, & get a D. It would be funny, were it not so sad & predictable.
