The OP is talking about the way a lot of the intellectual arguments against AI are starting to be heard from Catholic circles, and while I don't think they're wrong in this follow-up, it's also a consequence of the state of universities. We should be *the* spaces for this stuff, and we aren't.

The pretense in online spaces that discourse (no, not *the* discourse, don't be obtuse) has no pragmatic element would be less annoying if it was also less selective.

Between 1036 and 1094 CE, a Jewish merchant hired a Nile riverboat to take him and 700 dinars worth of goods to Alexandria. Instead, the sailors murdered him and stole his cargo. The victim's father sent this petition to the Fatimid Caliph al-Mustansir, formally requesting that he arrest the crew.

Emu night (1/2)
Comic page 1: a group of young emo people are hanging out in a venue with a banner that reads EMO NIGHT. Outside the venue, an emu is on the phone. He says, “yeah, could you pick me up? I think I misread the flyer.” Suddenly, behind the emu someone exclaims, “hey!”

Broadcast media and higher education are soft power -- important enough, you would think, for a government of a small country trying to punch above its weight internationally -- but they can also be EXPORTS, something that no modern government seems to understand?!

The way in which people who are 18-21 and above are increasingly not treated like adults is a) a big break from 20th Century society where that age usually went down and b) extremely negative.
