Close-up of the Castellani cistae a warrior in a panoply similar to that found at Orvieto and in the Volumni hypogeum. Note the Tarantine type cuirass with epomides and short pteryges.

So here's a fragment of fresco from Herculaneum. But what do you see? There's a hand on a spear. I *think* there's a bluish shield with a nude male figure painted upon it on the right side of the fragment. And if I'm not nuts, it reminds me of a Cretan archer's shield from a stele.

I offer a different interpretation, but first Polybius' word: " Their buckler was made of ox-hide, somewhat similar in shape to the round bosse cakes used at sacrifices. They were not of any use for attacking, as they were not firm enough; and when the leather covering peeled off and

A paper just dropped recently on some of the recovered Symes and Becchina frescoes, including some new ones that I I wasn't familiar with! One includes cavalrymen with montefortino helmets, with trident crests and plumes, and one of the shields includes a helmet with a transverse crest!

ENG/ESP Weapons from the Scocchera tomb A, found near Canosa. These were excavated unprofessionally in the 1890's then scattered across public and private collections so finding details on them is a bit annoying.

For a while now I've looked at these helmets on the Palestrina Niolitic mosiac and wondered what type they might be. Recently I've thought they might be West Asian, maybe Syrian? Any thoughts? (Also yes, I've considered these may be consequence of the later restoration the mosaic went through)

I've spent a few years wondering what kind of helmets are meant to be depicted on the reliefs at Side, Turkey. I thought it could be a Montefortino with a volute, but after seeing this helmet from the Hermitage, I wonder if it might be it (no. RP-13085).

It's hard to tell where Mithridates the II of the Bosporus got his troops from, but considering he was a Pontic prince educated in Pergamon, a tetrach over the Galatians and later ruled the Bosporus, there's a pretty good chance he dragged men from as far north as Ukraine and Russia to save Caesar

Ptolemaic Gladii? Recently checking the Royal Ontario Museum collection and found two swords, one dated from 300-200 B.C. and one broadly dated from the 1st century B.C. to 1st century A.D., both found in Al-Fayyum (unless I'm mistaken, should be were the famous shield was also found). Any thoughts?

Etruscan mirror with a warrior clearly wearing some form of Montefortino helmet, with strange lobed and scalloped cheekpieces and a neck guard. Any thoughts @nakhthor.bsky.social @profpaulj.bsky.social @drmichaeljtaylor.bsky.social ?
