This is incredibly important. I feel deeply that curbing sexual violence will come from raising social expectations of men, not from ‘educating’ them. I fear this is an unpopular view, because people are afraid to face up to the scale of the issue.

RIP Marcia Lucas, whose skill as a film editor and storyteller made a clunky independent film called STAR WARS greater than the sum of its parts. Rightly referred to as "Lucas's secret weapon," Marcia had an uncanny talent to see a film from the perspective of an audience--and won an Oscar for it.

It was Marcia who cut together the trench run sequence in STAR WARS, using every last second of FX footage, reducing the number of Luke's attempts on the port from three to one, and adding a "ticking clock" of the approaching Death Star. It's her savvy storytelling that makes the sequence coherent.

Watching a nearly finished cut of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, Marcia told Spielberg he HAD to have a scene at the end showing Indy and Marion together--that the audience needed some emotional closure. Spielberg knew she was right, and went out and shot this scene on the steps of the SF City Hall.

Paramount+ wanted to use the image on the left as a poster for the wrath of Khan, so they used everyone's least favorite technology to generate the rest of the image.

Ok not quite end rant because I cooked a little bit here (OC link upthread):
A show is doing something right when both parts of the following sentence matter: You care about 1) what happens next 2) to these people. A drama like 24? Much more weighted toward what happens next. A show like The O.C.? Much more grounded in getting us to care about these specific people and their relationships. But when a project is firing on all cylinders as regards both 1) and 2)? That is the good stuff right there.

The waits between seasons doubled in last 10 yrs — & this piece doesn’t get into it, but when execs also demand shorter seasons, in some cases way too short, the end result = audiences that just don’t engage with shows/characters the same way. www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/w...

My proposal: whatever gets built, we destroy it, and leave the rubble. Let Trump’s legacy be a visual reminder of the destruction he inflicted, and the end of his political power. Maybe every January 6, the present removes one brick, and slowly we clean the stain on the republic.
