the amount of stuff that ethernet PHYs can report, & the depth it gets to, is wild. we don’t see half of it in our usual show commands, or any network GUI. and unless you have like, a PHY EVB, or a custom-made or jailbroken network device, this stuff just sits in the background

Random historical MPLS thing I learned today, surprised I hadn't seen mentioned before: there was once an attempt to make a version of LDP that could do constraint-based traffic engineering. datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc3212/ Wikipedia says the IETF stopped progressing it in 2003 in favour of RSVP.
