Now some think if you don't say the phrase "racial capitalism" you don't consider the intersection between racism and capitalism. As if many scholars, activists, and organizers who challenge capitalism didn't make the connection before the concept. Goodness, what kind of reading practices are these.

This detail from the NYT obit of disgraced and resurrected televangelist Jim Bakker, and his oldest pivot in the book www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/u...
The new ministry was low-key compared with that of the Bakkers’ high-flying PTL days. Its focus was different, too. The end of days was nigh, Mr. Bakker now preached, and he offered viewers what he said they would need to ride out the Apocalypse: long-lasting food, 10 buckets of it for $600 plus shipping costs. His message had a bluntly conservative political cast. “God has called” Donald J. Trump, he said. Barack Obama “sounded like the representative for Antichrist,” he said in 2016, and Hillary Clinton was “a bride of Satan.”

Resist the temptation to do that. The reality is that sexual violence is a problem at every university in the US. National comparisons aren’t hugely useful. And even the “best” school isn’t safe enough for women.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: more states need transparency laws that require schools to collect and share data about sexual violence and sexual violence response. Enough is Enough is a good blueprint. Take it to your state legislatures.

And to be clear, in states like New York with a law like Enough is Enough, we do have climate survey data and Title IX data. That’s why experts have a good sense of what’s driving changes in reporting rates at Cornell.

Even at an individual school, it’s easier to understand reporting rates with the context of longitudinal climate survey data on students’ self-reported rate of sexual victimization.

But again, that trend is complicated. Schools with expansive mandatory reporting policies tend to see a long term decrease in reports because victims are so traumatized by the surveillance culture created that they tend to self-silence.

Many of these reports are not actionable. They are things like, “[student name] disclosed they were a survivor during office hours.”

Which brings me to the other big variable: mandatory reporting policies. If a school has an expansive mandatory reporting policy, then they have more reports made about survivors than by survivors—including multiple reports about the same incident.

On the opposite side of the coin, we also see reporting rates explode after high-profile cases. People like alumni who are angry about the school’s institutional betrayal file reports about things that happened to them years ago. Faculty may also be more inclined to file mandatory reports.

One of the biggest ones is trust in the Title IX system. A school with a really low reporting rate isn’t necessarily a place where violence doesn’t occur, but rather a place where students know they will be mistreated if they come forward.

In general, researchers find that a school’s Clery Act reported numbers of sexual assaults is NOT reliable enough to use as an indicator of the rate of sexual violence on campus OR the rate of reports made to Title IX.

Conversely, some schools have much lower Clery numbers because they are more selective about what they include (e.g., only counting on campus incidents), knowing that Clery numbers are public and can affect reputation.

The number of reported sexual assaults in a school’s Clery numbers can be higher than the number of students who reported to Title IX, especially if a school requires confidential spaces (like a victim advocacy office) to share basic information like the number of their clients for Clery.

The Clery Act is a national law that requires schools to self-report the number of crimes that happened on campus each year.

The first thing to note is that a lot of these national comparisons are apples and oranges. They’re a mix of Title IX-specific data (from state transparency laws like New York’s Enough is Enough) and Clery Act data.

Dude was mad that the pope wouldn’t say his imaginary friend had a soul. You can’t make this shit up.
Before he flew out, Olah received a copy of the encyclical the Pope was about to publish — and what he saw was a disaster in the making. One of the most influential people in the world full stop, and almost certainly its most visible faith leader, was completely dismissing even the possibility of AI consciousness. So indignant was Olah that he reportedly threatened to pull out of the event, though in the end he decided to show up.

According to the NYT, once the Anthropic delegation arrived at the Vatican, Olah and his team lobbied the pope’s advisers to take the possibility of AI consciousness seriously. Anthropic declined to discuss the details of the conversations when the NYT reached for comment.
