Archer’s resignation from the London mayoral race after it was revealed he lied in court was the thing that got Paul Foot up from his sickbed and contributing again, having first started chronicling Archer’s lies and misdemeanours in 1969. From the Private Eye archive. Issue 992, December 1999.

100% the vibe that Lanterns poster gives off
A two panel cartoon the first showing someone peeing at a urinal, and a second person walking past. Second panel shows rhe second person peeing at the Urinal next to the first. Underneath that is the Lanterns poster with Hal Jordan looking straight forward and John Stewart giving him the angry side eye, the ol’ hairy eyeball.

A touch of the Adrian Moles? Perhaps Andy Burnham's magic touch is that he is the realization of the person Adrian Mole* aspired to be? *An everyman literary national treasure

History is written by the victors. Thatcher broke the power of trade unions by mass unemployment, industrial restructuring, frittered away N Sea Oil, laid the foundations for the current housing crisis, decimated local bus services, hollowed out local government and introduced the poll tax.
Simon Clarke

Andy Burnham seems to remember a different 1970s to the rest of us. Britain in 1979 was utterly broken - ravaged by unaccountable trade union power, economically stagnant, the sick man of Europe.
The 1980s saw a remarkable national recovery based on free enterprise, the rule of law and championing Western values. And it is this that our Prime Minister rails against...

It is rather notable that, one day after Burnham announced his vague but significant policy positions on the triple lock and EU ties, neither the Tories nor Reform are making much noise about the EU position. Given this, and the rather positive reaction to social care, perhaps moderate centrism

Crazy to think multiple Tory governments promised lower migration but fudged on it at budgets because they wanted more headroom for tax cuts, and now a Labour government desperate for more headroom has cut numbers to their own detriment.

Also, as Ben says, the silence around this massive gap (not only in pure monetary terms but in skills and workforce pressures) is shocking in itself. Just an acceptance that shooting ones leg off to appease voters who will never vote for them is worth the cost.

Perhaps breaking that silence would mean challenging the predominant idiotic and often racist narrative that higher levels of migration has no positive consequence. An argument they either too ignorant to believe themselves or simply do not have the courage to make.

I've found Lidl very hit and miss the last few weeks. Some really deadful cucumbers a few weeks ago and rotten peppers. We've recently switched from local Aldi to Lidl across the car park because Aldi 'refreshed' their store and took out a whole raft of fresh fruit & veg.
