Happy 12th anniversary to this immensely important editorial in Britain’s newspaper of record, the [checks notes] Sunday Sport.
Editorial in the Sunday Sport:

SUNDAY Sport likes to remain above the squabbles and spats which often divide our tired old
Fleet Street rivals.
We serve our readers, not the petty rivalries of editors or proprietors.
But we are today forced to join a debate after our very integrity was questioned by The Guardian.
And the heated issue is the spelling
of the word "BELLEND".
This left-wing,
loss-making house
journal of Britain's chattering classes recently updated its style guide - the manual which tells its journalists how to spell certain oft-misspelt words.
In defiance of common sense and common decency Guardian bigwigs have decreed their galley slaves spell out bellend as "bell-end"
They
may find
this bohemian
departure from orthodoxy "challenging" but it is a direct assault on the English language.
Do not forget, the teachers of Britain suckle at the teat of The Guardian like hungry puppies.
This misspelling of bellend will be forced into the easily-moulded minds of our nation's schoolchildren.
The
Guardian.
Wrong about everything. Always.

This looks like a cool queer history conference!
Call for Papers: Queer Rural History Symposium
Date: Monday 15th March 2027
Venue: The Museum of English Rural Life, Reading, RG1 5EX
Lunch to be provided for all attendees
About the Symposium
Until recently, studies of queer history have focused almost exclusively on the urban sphere, given the greater availability of archival material evidencing queer lives in the city. The few queer rural histories which have been popularised in public consciousness are those of aristocrats in country homes, such as Anne Lister and Vita Sackville-West. However, it goes without saying that people with dissonant sexualities and gender identities lived and loved in all corners of society throughout the centuries, including the countryside. As such, there is a growing appetite for broader research into this area. How did queer people meet those who were like-minded in regions of scarce population density? What forms did their relationships take against a backdrop of criminality and stigma? And how did rural attitudes towards queer people differ to those in the city?
This one day symposium aims to bring together researchers of all backgrounds, and at any stage of their work, to share ideas and discuss methods on this emerging field of study. It works towards the goal of not just filling gaps in academic knowledge that exist for both rural history and queer history, but also to show queer people living in the countryside today that there is, and always has been, a heritage and a place for them.Proposals
We invite proposals on themes such as, but not limited to, the following:
1.
Queer histories of the working and middle classes in rural areas
2.
Methodologies for recovering queer rural histories, such as the use of museum and archive collections
3.
Queer rural networks: how they met and flourished
4.
The response of rural communities to queer relationships
5.
Migration of same sex couples from the city to the countryside and vice versa
6.
The ways in which museums and archive services respond to queer rural history
If you would like to submit a proposal, please send an abstract (max 250 words) along with a short bio (50 words) to symposium organisers Tim Jerrome and Esther Rutter at t.jerrome1@uni.brighton.ac.uk. It is preferable that these come in the form of a Word document attached to the email. The deadline for submissions is 5pm on Sunday 6th December 2026.
If you would like to attend the symposium without presenting a paper, let us know via the above email as we need to ensure we do not go above capacity.
We are currently applying for funding to help cover travel costs for those who need it. Please let us know if you would like to attend but would require assistance with travel costs to do so. Priority will be given to attendees where cost would otherwise be a barrier to participation.
Many thanks to Rainbow Canopy (The LGBTQ+ network of Forestry England), the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, and the staff at The MERL for helping us to fund and organise the symposium.

We've extended the deadline for submissions for "Queer and Trans Medieval Communities" at next year's @imc-leeds.bsky.social to *8 September*! If you work on any aspect of medieval trans and queer communitie(s), please consider sending in an abstract. We'd love to hear from you!
As the existence of the trans and queer community is under constant and increasing threat across the world – with alt-right political rhetoric in the West seeking to rupture solidarity for and within the global queer community – the work of the historian has never been more vital. Historians have long found solidarity and recognition of queer experiences and practices with individuals and groups of the past. In concert with the wealth of current research being produced in trans and queer medieval studies, this panel session responds to the urgency of this present moment. In the face of existential threats, we recognise the importance of finding community with one another, which includes understanding our community has a history. This panel session seeks not only to contribute to transtemporal and scholarly trans and queer community building, but to better understand what historical trans and queer communities and practices may have looked like – including the mechanisms and structures that attempted to preclude such community formations. Engaging with and making legible such histories constitutes an act of compassion both with historical actors and with living members of our community today. It also constitutes an act of resistance, by finding existence and continuity in community.
Presentations may address but are not limited to the following topics:
-Cultivating cross-temporal queer and trans community
-How trans and genderqueer experiences manifest in the Middle Ages
-Spaces in which queer/trans community could be manifested in the Middle Ages
-Communal failure/loss of community
-A failing or absence of a trans and queer community
-Texts, codes, etc. used in constituting queer/trans communities in the Middle Ages
-Methodologies available for talking about trans/queer communities

CALL FOR PAPERS: INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MEDIEVAL STUDIES 2027 (MAY 13-15). RETHINKING ECOTHEORY, SPONSORED BY MEDIEVAL ECOCRITICISMS This pair of sessions questions 'entanglement' as the predominant idiom of ecocritical thinking, arguing that the medieval past both yields and necessitates alternative ways of thinking about our ecological investments, both affective and ontological. Drawing upon recent critiques (Swarbick and Tremblay 2024), this pair of sessions interrogates the limits of 'enmeshment' as the predominant idiom for ecocritical approaches to the premodern past. Although the (specifically European) premodern past is often identified as 'The Green Middle Ages' (e.g. Chavannes- Mazel 2023, Kehnel 2024), these sessions question the recuperation of this period as one of ethical, reciprocal, and harmonious relations between humans and the natural world.
