The final miles to Holy Island took us down to the Causeway. After bridging a river along the road, the Pilgrims Way heads off barefoot across the tidal mudflats for 4km till we reach Holy Island. A good foot massage as well as a contemplative rhythm is a fitting end to our weeklong trail.

Today, day 6 of our 110km hike along St Cuthbert’s Way, we got our first sightings of the North Sea and then of Holy Island (Lindisfarne). We passed St Cuthbert’s Cave.

St Cuthbert and other Celtic monks sought solitude on islands or in caves. Yesterday’s 15-mile stage of St Cuthbert’s Way provided total solitude too. Across high moorlands with almost no human habitation, only sheep for company.

Day 4 of St Cuthbert’s Way was a short leg taking us onto health-topped hills, to our highest point on the route, Wideopen Hill (1207 ft / 368m). Our detour to stay overnight at Kelso allowed us to admire the ruins of the Tironensian abbey at Kelso.

Day 3 of St Cuthbert’s Walk takes us along the Teviot and from the gorgeous low-lying beech woods up to higher farmlands, past Cessford Castle, a stronghold during the periods of lawlessness.

Day 2 of St Cuthbert’s Way ambled from St Boswell's (named after St. Boisil, Cuthbert's first prior) along the banks of the fast-flowing Tweed, with fly-fishers angling for salmon. And then along Dere Street, the old Roman road that runs between York and the Antonine Wall beyond Edinburgh.

Day 1 of our director's walk/pilgrimage from Melrose to Lindisfarne (Holy Island) set off from Mile Zero at Melrose Abbey.

Our intrepid Arc director, armed with the Vita Cuthberti, has set off on a week-long walk-cum-pilgrimage from Melrose Abbey, where St. Cuthbert started his religious life, to Lindisfarne (Holy Island), 110km or so. The preliminary stop was in Galashiels, south of Edinburgh in the Borders.

Focusing on Christian Europe and their immediate neighbours, contributors ask: To what extent did medieval peoples, polities, and territorial principalities represent or constitute nations? When and where can we discern this occurring? www.arc-humanities.org/978180270424...

This book represents a risky experiment in art-history writing. It takes objects of Byzantine art—manuscript illustration, frescos, mosaic, sculpture—and reads them through the lenses of disability studies, media studies, and gender studies.. www.arc-humanities.org/978180270414...
