Ah, lovely to see my chapter on Gray's queer Celticism written up in the Year's Work in English Studies - thanks to the authors and editors! (DM/email me if you're interested in the piece and can't source it in a library)
Kaminski-Jones, meanwhile, revives Gray’s medievalism alongside another longstanding discussion about his sexuality, refreshing work by George Haggerty and Robert Gleckner with new insights into Gray’s Welsh connections. Where in the past ‘The Bard’ has seemed ‘a hirsute epitome of masculine national fortitude, embodying Celtic resistance’, Kaminski-Jones returns to the eighteenth-century reception of Gray’s bardic hero as suspiciously effeminate (at least according to Johnson) (p. 168). Evidenced by the rarefied obscurity and temporal slipperiness of ‘The Bard’, by letters that use Celtic tales to loosen gender distinctions and by later commonplace-book entries constructing Wales as England’s ‘definitional other’, Gray’s Celticism belongs to a transgressive, androgynous, even perverse figuring of Wales against a hardy, hetero-patriarchal England at a time of heightened national self-consciousness (p. 181). Defined by such taste-making commentators as Johnson as a delicate outsider to the publishing mainstream, Gray found in Celtic history and literature a repertoire for representing marginality in ways that correspond to our modern understanding of queer experience and expression.

In our edition of Thomas Pennant's 1772 tour you can read his rather shocked account of these òrain-luaidh (waulking songs) on Skye "the fury of the song rises; at length it arrives to such a pitch, that without breach of charity you would imagine a troop of female dæmoniacs to have been assembled"

This is a lovely sketchbook I was assessing yesterday - by Welsh artist Calvert “Richard the Rev” Jones, largely of maritime scenes. He lived in Swansea so many are of the sea there in 1828-1831, elegantly rendered. But there’s a couple of nice bonuses in the book…
A watercolour and ink drawing of boats at sea, full sails billowing, executed in blacks and greys and pale brown and dusky pinkAnother boat scene, this time monochrome in dark blue-grey

I do enjoy the annual assessment question quotation hunt for my Celtic Revivals module (this time featuring, for the first time, @llinosanwyl.bsky.social)
2) ‘The relationship between language and land is real... Languages grow in place, shaped by geography, labour, memory, and movement. The difficulty is not the connection itself, but what happens when that connection is aestheticised, stripped of social life, and returned as mood. Something you can step into briefly, without having to stay.’ [Llinos Anwyl (2026)]

Using this quotation, critically examine how at least two Revivalist authors/movements portrayed the relationship between Celtic landscapes, Celtic-speaking cultures, and Celtic revivalism.

3) ‘Yeah, my mother was reading the Mabinogion, the Welsh mythological epic, when I was born…and decided to name me Rhiannon. That definitely got me interested in sort of Celtic culture and stuff, but, you know, that whole idea of, "Is it my culture?" It gets asked of me in a way that white people who do blues don't get asked.’ [Rhiannon Giddens (2016)]

Using this quotation, critically examine how at least two Revivalist authors/movements have dealt with questions of authenticity, appropriation, and exclusivity with respect to Celtic cultural and/or ethnic identities.

"Russell Crowe has got jacked with a wrestler to play the last macho Scottish druid (filming in Spain)" 🙃
Set in the mountains of Caledonia in Scotland, The Last Druid will see Crowe play a Celtic elder who runs into trouble after a Roman emperor discovers a hidden Druid settlement. Set at some point between the years 100-400 CE, Crowe’s character will be forced to defend his family and community – and it seems he’ll need some muscle to do that.
