Hoped that seeing David Strathairn as Vladimir at the Guthrie would help me better appreciate Waiting for Godot, and it did! Last performance is Sunday evening, get those tickets!

I never thought I was any good at spotting the Big Dipper but turns out it’s just right there. Has been this entire time. Looming like a postcard town’s church steeple. I thought of one of those videos where they put glasses on a blind baby and it sees its parents for the first time.
October 18, 2025

The four of us stumbled out across the sand in the dark toward where the tongue of the water lapped at the high tide line and stood silently for some time listening to the collected absences. The universal and the personal. My god the stars are so close and low up here one of us said and we all looked up in unison.

I thought of the Laura Gilpin poem about the two-headed calf. Then the Vincent D'Onofrio tweet about the pig.

A dwindling bonfire up around the bend of the shoreline.

Should I put on some music someone said and we all said sure by which we meant please do not and that was that. It was well past the end of the season and going to be cold at this time of night either way but the call of the water was persistent.

How much would it take for you to jump in right now one of us said and we all thought about it for a minute or two. Calculating the relative severity of wind and squealing distance back to the cottage. I guess I would do it for like $200 one of us said and it was deflating because it wasn’t enough to be excited about. No one gets a little jolt up the spine over $200. They really were quite close and low though. These stars. This is what everything is supposed to look like I thought. What it has always looked like. I never thought I was any good at spotting the Big Dipper but turns out it’s just right there. Has been this entire time. Looming like a postcard town’s church steeple.

I thought of one of those videos where they put glasses on a blind baby and it sees its parents for the first time. Everyone crying. In the video and the people watching at home too.

I felt the presence of my phone in my pocket whispering to me to try to take a picture of it all to alert the world to what the world actually is but then snapped to my senses and stood down.

I cannot translate this for any of you. Cannot break this news.

It’s no wonder that almost every story we ever told ourselves about creation came from people who drove themselves mad staring at all of this light above us.

I didn’t even get around to the full moon yet. Pregnant to bursting.

You could dream of something better even now if you looked at it all for too long. Maybe that’s why they had to dull the sky with toil and industry. A barricade against the divine.

front page headline in today's Strib is just tooooo rich "If and when Lindell registers to vote in Minnesota, he will likely be registered in two states until Texas officials remove his name from the state’s voter rolls."
Front page headline in today's Minnesota Star Tribune:
Lindell not registered to vote in Minnesota; Trump's governor pick says he is unsure where he can cast his ballot, by Walker Orenstein and Emilie Munson. Before he can vote for himself in next month's primary, Mike Lindell needs to register to vote in the state he wants to lead for governor.

Huh. Elizabeth really is the mold in which every Not Like Other Girls sort of heroine is cast. She’s definitely pretty, but only a normal amount of pretty—surely not as pretty as her very pretty big sister—but who cares because she’s so smart, so so smart, which is why she’s dad’s favorite.

Unreal to live in a city with so many ways to enjoy nature, most connected by bike paths. I appreciate Minneapolis every day!
A bridge looking out over a lake, with the sun setting in the background. On the bridge in the foreground is a bicycle.A stream running through the woods. There are large stones along the banks on either side of the river.A waterfall surrounded by trees and vining plants.

Yesterday, for the first time that I've witnessed, there was a detainee boarding the MSP ICE Air flight without shackles. "Oh! A new loophole the lawyers could use to improve treatment," I thought. I pinged @gillianbrockell.com - she pointed me to the ICE Air handbook exemption for pregnant women.

Today will be 2026’s 100th ICE Air flight at MSP. Feds are still taking Minnesotans who are doing things the right way. Our airport authority is still failing to publicly acknowledge reality, provide transparency, or pressure Delta to flex its political muscle. We cannot stop paying attention.

The fact that MPD's excessive hours during OMS were driven by their concerns about resident behavior, rather than their intent to protect us from the violent threat of ICE and CBP agents, adds insult to this financial injury. This is a deeply upsetting indicator of the department's orientation.

The internet: because where else can people who take their dog to see Santa Claus get snarky about parents taking babies to the zoo.
Threads post from user nugget1775

I have a sincere question to parents. Why do you take a child to the zoo when they are too young to register what is happening? Is it for photos “i took my baby to the zoo” kinda thing for online bc why else? They are asleep half the time and can they actually SEE what is happening around them? Like oh look at the monkey 30 feet away. I get the quality time aspect of it. But logically. Why lolA woman wearing matching pajamas with her dog sitting next to Santa Claus

Grim realization I had recently was they used to do that thing where they'd always delay a violent movie or TV episode if it was concurrent with a mass shooting, like that was all we could think of to do, and now they're just too much ambient noise to even do that anymore

As an energy nerd in the heartland, I guess you a) inevitably get sucked into land-use debates that pit ag against renewables, and b) eventually learn how little crop yield actually goes to feeding humans, how much land/corn just makes ethanol for cars, and how much more effective solar -> EVs is.

Absolutely gutting story on Annunciation parents pouring their souls into enlightening legislators, knowing they’d the GOP brick wall. But the piece contains one of the most horrifying paragraphs an American parent could read; it will stay with me: www.startribune.com/in-living-ro... (gift)
From the Star Tribune: “The damage to Harper's body was so severe, we were not allowed to see her, hold her, or be with her body ever again," [her mother] said. "And then, months later, as the pews were removed from that church, more of her remains were found. We had to cremate our daughter a second time. Imagine receiving that
phone call. And then tell me, what is this gun for? Hunting?
There are other tools. Home defense? There are other tools.
What is this one for?"

there's a thing I like to call "load-bearing assumptions", that you don't notice until they're suddenly gone (e.g the air you breath has oxygen in it). the post-ww2 order is a load-bearing assumption for basically the entirety of american life. trump took a sledgehammer to it in the last 90 days.

Everything about Giant Pandas makes more sense if you imagine they're drunk 100% of the time. For example: This is how they pee. They climb their back legs as high as possible (on trees, rocks) to increase chances urine odor catches the breeze to attract mates.
A giant panda peeing by climbing their back legs ridiculously high against a concrete embankment made to look like natural rock.
