the classic Tatra KT4, a boxy looking tram with pure red body and navy blue underframe

a curvy, very classic looking and narrow tram in full pale green with a white stripe at mid height, this is one of Belgrade's borrowed Duewag GT6s from Basel, built between 1967 and 1972... this one has its own wee pal bringing up the rear, yes it's a tram carriage to give three cars in total

it's another Basel three car GT6, this time in yellow with a big red stripe along the mid height

The DfT just posted this self-congratulatory propaganda on Facebook. This is horseshit. Battery trains have a very minor role to play as a transition technology, but in the foothills of a seismic energy crisis, swapping one form of energy dependency for another is crap politics and worse planning.

Electric trains are powered by overhead lines or a third rail. Compared to diesel, electric trains are:
1. faster - they accelerate and decelerate quicker
2. quieter - there are no motors, reducing vibrations
3. lighter - increasing capacity, reducing stress on rails
4. emission free - helping us reduce our reliance on diesel

Battery-electric trains use the
Overhead lines or a third rail to also charge a battery. They:
Use existing power lines - reducing the need for new infrastructure and allowing investment elsewhere
Avoid complex upgrades - like building new infrastructure on uneven land, which is costly and takes longer
Avoid disruptions to services - caused by infrastructure upgrades & repairs

Battery-electric trains can be charged at train stations and on electrified lines.
Trains then run on non-electrified portions of the network.
This technology can help spread the benefits of electric trains to more communities, much sooner.

It's great to hear the new trains on TransPennine Express will deliver independent boarding for more passengers. We need step-free access to the platform and level boarding everywhere so disabled passengers can travel with ease and confidence, instead of having to wait for Passenger Assistance.

One flaw with this idea is that airlines are only profitable due to their highly prejudicial tax treatment: aviation fuel is untaxed, and flights would be wildly more expensive if it were taxed like other liquid hydrocarbon fuels. There are many plausible futures in which airlines end up broke
