Mentally I’m on the beach. Railway Electrification

I actually think this framing is sorta wrong. Heathrow express has three features that are distinct from the EL 1. It’s nonstop to paddington 2. It terminates 3. Premium pricing.

Is it time to end the Heathrow Express? Ending the pricey rail line that connects Paddington and the airport would open track space for Elizabeth Line trains that carry travelers into and through central London on only a slightly longer journeys.

London transfer: is it time to kill off the Heathrow Express?
With fares high and passenger numbers low, plans for a third runway could bring the train’s future into question

Wow, El Diario has a big visual feature basically showing exactly this – the rental aspect of Spain’s housing crisis is largely a transfer of wealth from immigrants to individual older, wealthy-but-often-not-filthy-rich Spanish apartment owners, not corporations bsky.app/profile/eldi...

Don’t want to call anyone out, but this sentiment is, if not ubiquitous, common in mass transit advocacy, but I think is just inaccurate. Everyone crooned over Josh Shapiro after he “fixed” I-95, but USA highway departments have shown a total inability to deal with complex structure issues.

The Serra das Arraras is the single reason Brazil gave up on passenger trains between Rio and São Paulo, as it's a massive climb of around an 8% grade if you attack it directly. Worse yet, you never go back down. Meanwhile the road manages to be far more direct and is being upgraded right now.

Grassley, the Senate’s president pro tempore, was born on September 17, 1933, and will be 95 when his term expires in January 2029. He has declined to rule out running for reelection again; if he won another term, he would be 101 when his next term would end.

Yeah and it’s becoming increasingly irrelevant in NYC as people move away from buying food at these quirky places (bodegas, fruit stands, local supermarket co-ops) and shift buying to national chains (WFM, TJ’s, Aldi, Lidl) who are not sourcing from within the city at all.

Ok talk me out of this It looks like a High Speed bypass from saves 70 km and something like 1.5 hours between Stockholm and Oslo. Feels like something the countries should be looking at, or is the geography just totally impossible even for the Norwegian tunnelers?

There are in fact railroads worldwide that have made billions of dollars shipping ore often quite long distances. Admittedly said ore is mostly going to ports.

The Walking Dead is such a silly show. 12th century technology like a moat would have made their settlements safe from zombies. Surely there were excavators just sitting around. They could have put their houses on stilts like they do at the beach.

I always thought under-slung BART wouldn’t fit through the Golden Gate Bridge towers, but it turns out BART is small and the bridge is huge. Here is a mockup in 1/100 scale, BART fits easily.

Since its founding, the California Coastal Commission, charged with a dual mission of protecting the coast & ensuring public access to it, has interpreted its mission through an auto-oriented lens. It has undermined transit & walkability by demanding ample, usually free, parking at every development
