I'd rip up the car park and integrate with the current P1 to create a new Metro concourse at high level, there'd be a lot of extra footfall.

I think I'd be looking very closely at how to add two tracks "along" the ECML to see where you'd leave the existing right of way to add useful stations northwards.

Or extra platforms at Morpeth.

Gareth Dennis @garethdennis.uk · 03/10/2026
Yeah exactly, so you get the coverage of the link between the two lines without needing a third service pattern.

Gareth Dennis @garethdennis.uk · 03/10/2026
Or rather, I think I'd run Newc-Cram-Morp-Bedlington and reverse from there, given there's more capacity for turnback off the ECML

Gareth Dennis @garethdennis.uk · 03/10/2026
Actually I'd not thought of that and I was running two services into Morpeth from both directions - but that's actually quite a lot neater!

Here's a handy guide. If the media are saying a politician is doing socialism, they're not doing socialism. If a politician is doing socialism, the media is telling you they're doing islamic terrorism, destroying western civilization, turning your kids gay and in league with china.

Just saw this @garethdennis.uk post on twitter dot com, and think it’s valuable to remember the vastly different contexts that exist today compared to when Donald Heath was put in charge of the ECML electrification project

Why This Beautiful Main Line Is A Mess - @garethdennis.uk #Railnatter 322 youtu.be/R2SJRtjQidc?... Very convincing in analysing capacity & need across whole line, Newcastle to Edinburgh, for commuter services at either end, & a vision of integrated local busses on Heritage Coast…

Well this has been in the works for a long time. Might have happened a decade ago if a clause hadn't been added to the 2017 buses act to preserve the legacy of Thatcher. www.standard.co.uk/news/london/...

This is @ukri.org effectively abandoning what it means to be part of academia. There, humans read things, critique things, and provide feedback, even if it is not the feedback we want. It is symptomatic of the developing horror that is the UK research funding landscape. It's horrendous.

The BBC has long given up even pretending to be interested in who these people are, why they are coming or how they might feel, in favour of acting as a kind of shop window for the parties to display their wares of violence and cruelty

A new London Overground route is being proposed – the West London Orbital 🟠 🚆 Got thoughts? Have your say through TfL’s open consultation by Wednesday 18 November See the proposals and respond here 🔗 haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/west-london-…
An informational map diagram published by Transport for London and the Mayor of London in September 2026, showing the proposed route for the West London Orbital rail service. The route is a vertical line with station markers. From the north, the line starts at Hendon and Brent Cross West, both offering National Rail connections to Luton. It goes south to Neasden (new station, Jubilee line link) and Harlesden (new station, Lioness and Bakerloo line links). It reaches Old Oak Common Lane, a new station with major interchanges to Heathrow Express, HS2, the Central line, and the Elizabeth line. Continuing south, it stops at Acton Central and South Acton (both linking to the Mildmay line), followed by Lionel Road (new station, Kew Bridge link). The southern section goes through National Rail stations at Brentford, Syon Lane, and Isleworth, ending at Hounslow. Official TfL, Overground, and Mayor of London logos sit at the bottom.
