The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

In countries such as Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Sweden, governments have issued manuals on what to do if Russian troops invade. These countries have dealt with regular Russian incursions since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

A bird just used my roof to crack a walnut. It sounded like someone knocking. I live in the middle of nowhere, but no alarm, no gate bell, so big surprise. Dogs went ballistic, I jumped up and overenthusiastic prepared to do battle, even the cat stood up, yawned and readied his nails.

When people use generative AI instead of a human proofreader, the very successful marketing of AI as actual intelligence means that more people are prepared to sacrifice their own style & their own quirks for the sake of a clockwork oracle that doesn't know anything but which replicates other texts.

UK shares findings of damning climate crisis national security report suppressed under Starmer
El Niño poses critical threat to nations’ defences, says Ed Miliband in presentation to global foreign ministers The UK has warned countries around the world that the climate and nature crises and the coming El Niño threaten their national security and defence, presenting foreign ministries with the findings of an explosive report suppressed under Keir Starmer. Ed Miliband, the foreign secretary, made a presentation to the foreign ministers of the EU as well as Kenya and other countries on Wednesday night at a private meeting during the UN general assembly in New York, based on the report by the UK’s spy chiefs that found the collapse of natural systems around the world would lead to conflict, migration and food shortages. Surprised Eel Historian, PhD @greenleejw.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Eels weren't just an English thing; Scotland has an eel history, too! Famed 14th C. king Robert the Bruce loved his eels. Too much, maybe. His doctor thought the king risked his health by eating them, as eels live in "muddy & corrupt waters." Did the Bruce care? No. He did not. 🗃️🧪
Meme. Still of Robert the Bruce from the movie "Braveheart." Bobby is sitting on a throne, his hand on his forehead. He is wearing sumptuous clothes and a super-fancy gold chain with jewels. He looks kingly, but also rather hassled. His expression reads as worried and/or annoyed. He is staring straight ahead, though not quite at you. It seems as if he's looking at your right shoulder. Do you have something perched there, like a basket of baby crocodiles?

The Big Bruce is sporting a running-out of patience vibe. He's done with you and your baby crocs, and all he really wants is for you to finish what you're saying so that he can get back to bing-watching Warrior Nuns on Netflix. You're giving him a migraine, and it's going to take several bowls of ice cream to forget about you.

Somedays it's good to be king. Somedays it's all headaches and door-to-door crocodile salesmen.

Meme text reads:
"Trying to rule Scotland
But all you can
think about are eels"

I once said this to @amywestervelt.bsky.social and I stand by the statement. “I don't think you can call anything where you're getting more oil out of the ground to burn a climate solution.” drilled.media/news/ccs
"It doesn't make sense to use CCS to prolong our use of fossil fuels, especially to produce electricity," David Ho, professor at University of Hawaii and senior researcher at Columbia Uni-versity, said. 'The argument in favor of enhanced oil recovery is often that if they weren't using this capt red CO2 they'd be using some other CO2. But I don't think you can call anything where you're getting more oil out of the ground to burn a climate solution."
