I do comedy, lecturing, journalism, radio and writing. I like beaches, books and buildings. Probably writing a bit too much about ovarian cancer at the moment because of reasons.

Why the fuck is Rajan wearing that stupid flight jacket inside the house. What a prize chump he is. #traitors

What was that from REG? Did he just think they were having a nice polite chat? Or a bluff? #CelebTraitors

Watching on delay. Just sussed that the nipper in the green cardie was the young Roman lad in the Horrible Histories film I watched the other day. And with that, I’ve got a sense of who they all are. #CelebTraitors

Bloody hell I forgot about Traitors. Right, better watch on catch-up (somehow I’ve already found out about a faux pas - or cunning quadruple bluff?)

Thanks to some incredible generosity from people here, I passed the £2k mark today, which occasioned a congratulatory phone call and a nice Facebook comment from the Ovarian Cancer Action people. Their focus is research, and this is the kind of thing it will help with.
And a HUGE congratulations on raising an incredible £2,022 already, absolutely phenomenal! To put your amazing fundraising into perspective,
£500 could fund an MSc or PhD
student who may make a breakthrough with this disease for just under a week at the Ovarian Cancer Action Research Centre

I’ve made a strong start on my bid to walk 100 miles in a month. I know it doesn’t seem far, but post-surgery and on fatigue-causing cancer drugs, it’s a challenge. 3.5 miles so far today with good company on a perfect autumn day at Saltram House.

I love this poem. It features in the excellent Faber Book of Movie Verse, which is probably the poetry book I return to most often.

Remembered to put my Fitbit on as soon as I woke up because I’ve started my Walk 100 Miles in a Month challenge for Ovarian Cancer Action. Pleased to announce I managed 0.02 miles walking around the kitchen while making coffee.

Wonderful stuff. Also: That’s Life was a *huge* programme in its time. Families gathered around the TV to watch. We’d talk about it in the school playground on Mondays.

Because I’m starting my “100 miles in a month” tomorrow, I’m strangely reluctant to go for a walk today because it feels like a waste of energy and feet. 😬

I ordered a thing. Discovered they use Evri for deliveries. I selected the option of having it delivered to the local post office to avoid it randomly being left in the communal hallway. Fortunately it was a low-cost item because I really don’t have the energy to track it down.

That’s not an iced gem. An iced gem is a stone hard dry bit of biscuit with some sharp icing on top and no flavour whatsoever. #gbbo

Loving the fact that I now have enough hair to feel the wind through it.
I’m smiling broadly in a bile yellow puffa jacket, the hood blown up behind me. My short hair is forming spikes in the wind. Plymouth Sound is the backdrop.

I had a nice chat with a Macmillan counsellor today. I was worried she’d suggest I join a support group, but we just had a lovely talk about anxiety as a normal part of life, and finding joy in stuff. And it was really helpful as a way of assuring me that I’m going along okay in my own way.

This is a lovely book. It’s a memoir about the break-up of her marriage, in which she rereads Agatha Christie from the beginning and finds comfort in her life and books. Includes the best account of that Harrogate incident that I’ve read. Bought at @agathafestival.bsky.social
A book called The Agatha Christie Cure - what reading the Queen of crime taught me about life by Cathy Rentzenbrink.

I will be marking the start of the first full week of my retirement tomorrow by getting the shingles vaccine, which is so retirement-coded I might as well be visiting a garden centre cafe.

For some reason we had term of timetabled ballroom dancing at my secondary school. Which I guess was designed to prepare us for - balls maybe? Except it was an all girls’ school and I was always the “man.” I wish we’d been made to switch positions like that. #strictly

I was really glad to see Friday Night Lights so high in the NYT telly programme chart. I feel that its warm heart means it’s not always rated this high, but it’s so good on the pressure on kids when the whole town relies on you for its mental wellbeing. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.

Here’s a nice thing. All of the lighthouses from the Plymouth lighthouse trail that I’ve been “bagging” all summer have been collected in one place for the final weekend. And it just happens to be at the lovely Devonport Market Hall not far from my flat.

Pretending that they put up this sign on campus specially for me (they didn’t).
I’m standing by a concrete pillar on which there is a sign that says: You’re phenomenal. Thank you for being part of the Marjon family.

Stop press: I have found my lanyard and door pass. They were, of course, in my fruit bowl along with a Stanley knife, a set of mini screwdrivers, the key to the gas meter box, some parcel tape and a torch. Still can’t find the bag but no longer important.
A university lanyard.

Update: I must have had it in June because I wore my lanyard at Open Day. But that means the lanyard is no longer in the bag so could be somewhere else entirely. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Proof of lanyard.
Me, with a lanyard, on a brutalist campus.
