Just finished chapter 4 of Brought To You By by @amywestervelt.bsky.social. Long time readers of Amy's work know who Ivy Lee and company are. But here, Amy ties them, their think tanks, etc. all together to help us truly understand the threat to our democracy, our planet. #DemolishMegaphones
Photo of part of page 96 of Brought To You By written by Amy Westervelt. Highlighted text reads "Maybe you're thinking, well, Amy, what if his ideas are just better? Fair enough! But it's very hard to evaluate the merits of two competing ideas when one is being amplified with the sort of megaphone that only a giant multinational can afford and the other is being distributed by an academic press while also being constantly criticized and ridiculed by the folks with the griant megaphone. This is where the point Brulle made about the public square really hits home. How can we say that a corporation should have "equal" speech rights to an individual when the corporation is so very capable of drowing out the individual?"

So....there's a lot of tea spilled about a lot of media outlets' willingness to be tools of corporate propaganda in my book. In hindsight, I probably should NOT have been surprised that many of those same outlets declined to run op-eds pegged to the book. But I kinda was! What thin-skinned babies!

Man, the framing of this bill is so rooted in insider DC politics. The idea that Ds have secured “major concessions”—i.e., a Trump promise to ease his oppo to renewables, esp. wind, which was lawless to begin with & unlikely to manifest beyond a handshake deal (not law)—strikes me as so bogus.
Politico: “Not dead yet: What’s next for permitting reform
Democrats are betting that they’ll be able to hold onto major concessions made by Republicans and the Trump administration with a vote after the election.”

I once said this to @amywestervelt.bsky.social and I stand by the statement. “I don't think you can call anything where you're getting more oil out of the ground to burn a climate solution.” drilled.media/news/ccs
"It doesn't make sense to use CCS to prolong our use of fossil fuels, especially to produce electricity," David Ho, professor at University of Hawaii and senior researcher at Columbia Uni-versity, said. 'The argument in favor of enhanced oil recovery is often that if they weren't using this capt red CO2 they'd be using some other CO2. But I don't think you can call anything where you're getting more oil out of the ground to burn a climate solution."

The perfect thing to hit my inbox. I too am tired of it.
While this position is described over and over again in the press, which is largely composed of people from the same class, as “moderate” or “reasonable,” it is anything but. When you know a preventable crisis is bearing down on you, and you know what to do to stop it, the sensible thing to do is act, not to fiddle around with your shopping list and ignore it. The reasonable recommendation right now is to do absolutely everything possible to stop the AI buildout and rapidly transition away from fossil fuels, and lucky for us those two things are inextricably linked. The data center buildout is ratcheting up the use of fossil fuels exponentially. Why not cancel both? Is it really more radical to make that suggestion than to suggest that 90 percent of the planet suffers enormously so that 10 percent of humans can remain comfortable?
