There's scarcely been a day's writing when I've not had cause to recall my favourite ever quote from an author about their own work, from a Paris Review interview with John Banville in 2009.
John Banville, speaking to Belina McKeon for The Paris Review in 2009:

INTERVIEWER

Do you really hate your own novels?

BANVILLE

Yes! I hate them. I mean that. Nobody believes me, but it’s true. They’re an embarrassment and a deep source of shame. They’re better than everybody else’s, of course, but not good enough for me. There is a great deal more pain than pleasure in writing fiction. It’s only now and then, maybe once every three or four days, that I manage to write a sentence in which I hear that wonderful harmonic chime that you get when, say, you flick the edge of a wine glass with a fingernail. That’s what keeps me going. When I read the proofs of a new novel—which is the last time I will read or even glance at it—I approach it with one eye closed, so to speak, thinking, God, what am I going to find here? And I find horrors, horrors that can’t be fixed. Everything in the text now seems hopelessly flat and deadened. Where I imagined a dancing rhythm, I find clumping and stumbling.

What an arrogantly vile man Harborne is. How patronising to describe his entitled buying up of our democracy as ‘philanthropy’. Get over yourself and go and build some hospitals, fund children out of poverty, eradicate disease… Sticking your grubby wealth in Farage’s pockets can only do us harm.

If your vote is undecided in the Clacton by-election this might be the clincher for you
I don’t usually discuss politics on here, it’s rarely worth the grief in our increasingly polarised country. However, I feel compelled to draw attention to point 17 of Count Binface’s newly released 20-point manifesto:
“The hand dryer in the gents’ toilet at the Great Himalayas restaurant, Southport, to be moved to a more sensible position.”
As it happens, the Great Himalayas is my favourite restaurant in Southport, and Natasha and I have eaten there many times.
Having investigated the matter with our friends in the local community, I can confirm that Binface really knows what he’s talking about. At last, a politician addressing the issues that affect ordinary people.

It's All About Me: Kemi Badenoch attacks politicians who are only in it for the drama. My SKETCH. thecritic.co.uk/your...
It was a Wednesday morning, but Prime Minister’s Questions had been cancelled because Keir Starmer was flying to China. Deprived of her weekly opportunity for parliamentary limelight, Badenoch had summoned us to a speech to accuse other people of wanting attention. This is one of those irregular verbs: He is a narcissist; You have an inflated opinion of yourself; I am the only person who can save the Conservatives and I can only achieve this if I’m never off the television.

“There are people in politics who don’t really know what they are doing, or why,” Badenoch announced, in one of many sections of the speech that a lesser politician would have been unable to deliver without laughing. Or crying. “They want access, attention and advancement, and when they don’t get their way, they create drama.” It was incredible stuff, in pretty much every sense of the word except the positive ones.

Ice Cold In The Far North: my SKETCH of PMQs and Donald Trump. thecritic.co.uk/ice-...
Later we would hear from the President, explaining that all he wanted was “a piece of ice, cold and poorly located”. There’s something mesmeric about Trump’s mumbling, rambling stream-of-consciousness speeches, bouncing from subject to subject like a ball in a pinball machine, occasionally hitting a hot-button subject and lighting up the entire board as he remembers how much he hates windmills, or what an amazing state the US economy is in, or some misunderstood fact from a CIA briefing or the back of a cereal packet.

We learned that during the Second World War, America had defended Greenland, seeing off “the Germans, the Japanese, the Italians too”, that the First World War (1914-18) had been ended by the Spanish Flu of 1919. Without America, “right now you’d all be speaking German,” he told his audience in Switzerland. He said he wasn’t planning to use force to take Greenland, but seemed to refer to it as “Iceland”. It would be a fitting next step in humanity’s dumbest century if Wo

Posting old halloween comics, #4. From 2015
For this comic you have to imagine it as two separate pictures depicting almost identical scenes. There are three kids dressed as a devil, a ghost and a witch, and they are outside a person’s home receiving treats on a tray from the resident. In the background, their parents - parent 1, parent 2 and parent 3, watch on from the pavement. There are labels pointing to every person in each scene.

HALLOWEEN IN AMERICA

[Labels]:

Joyful [a person at a cosy party seen through the window of the house]

Ebullient [Another person at the party, we see them laughing through the window]

Charmed [A fully dracula-costumed guy handing out trates at the front door]

Home made skull cookies and lemonade [The contents of the man’s tray he is handing out to the kids]

Delighted [The first kid on the path, dressed as a devil]

Excited [The second kid on the path, dressed as a ghost]

Enraptured [The third kid on the path, dressed as a witch]

Emotional [Parent 1, stood back on the pavement, beaming in joy]

Proud [Parent 2, clasping their hands, tearful]

Capturing the moment [Parent 3, taking a photo on their phone]

HALLOWEEN IN BRITRIN

[The same sort of scene, but in Britain]

[Labels]:

Angry [A dog barking out the window. There is no party going on in the house. Through the window we see a woman just wtching telly]

Offended [The woman having her TV show interrupted]

Resentful [Guy dressed in normal clothes, grumpily handing out ‘treats’ on a tray at the door]

2 Celebrations and a Rennie [The contents of his tray]

Disappointed [Child 1]

Awkward [Child 2]

Awkward [Child 3]

Awkward [Parent 1, standing with arms folded]

Mortified [Parent 2, looking embarassed]

Checking for paedophiles [Parent 3, looking suspiciously at the guy answering the door]

[ends]

Not many words in this cartoon - it's a mostly silent story of two crusading knights on horseback who travel through a series of wild fantasy landscapes, basically like a Lord of the Rings type quest, and then they eventually get to a modern british town, and they walk up a bleak British overpass, and then one of them climbs up a lamp post and sellotapes a sad little St George's flag to it, and the other one takes a photo on his phone, and then he climbs back down, and all the panels so far are reversed - back through all the different landscapes, their quest over. On the last panel knight 1 finally speaks asking "how many likes?" and the other one says "22".
