Gealach Ùr
Somhairle MacGill-Eain

Cuiridh mi làmh air corran na gealaich
agus òrd ceann-chruaidh thairis
air an òr f hann is troimhe:
is canadh Dia gur h-e an toibheum.

Brat crò-dhearg air a chùlaibh,
suaicheantas dòchais is dùile,
meirghe ’chinne-daonna ’g èirigh,
solas ùr laist’ anns na speuran.

A New Moon
Sorley MacLean

I will put a handle on the sickle of the moon
and a steel-headed hammer over
the feeble gold and through it:
and let God call it blasphemy.

A blood-red banner behind,
emblem of hope and expectation,
the standard of mankind arising,
a new star lit in Heaven.

Today's inspirational message:
Cartoon by Bernard Hage:

Title How to watch the collapse of civilisation

1. A bearded middle-aged man sitting in a chair, looking at his phone. He's slumped forward, his posture is terrible; a broken red line traces the curve of his back, and there's a red X next to the picture.

2. The same man sitting in the same chair looking at the same phone, but this time he's sitting up straight. A broken green line traces his straight spine, and there's a green tick next to the picture.

[Scene is a suburban UK street, at night. A voice is coming from a semi-detached house.]

VOICE:

So let me get this straight:

You're a large, magic bunny...

[Cut to interior scene. We see a close-crop of the EASTER BUNNY, standing in the darkened living room of the house. The room is all drawn in atmospheric purples and blues, and a quadrant of light is cast on the wall from a streetlight outside the window.]

[We are still looking at the bunny. He is holding a boxed Easter egg. We noiw see that the voice speaking is not him but is instead coming from a character outside of frame].

Who's broken into this house at 1am to deposit shop-bought chocolate eggs...

EASTER BUNNY [looking awkward]:

Yes.

VOICE:

So people can remember...Jesus.?

EASTER BUNNY:

Yes.

[Pause]

Well I mean it sounds weird when you say it like that.

It is weird.

EASTER BUNNY:

Not as weird as you!

[Pull wider shot. We now see that the Voice is that of a large HAMSTER, who is holding a digital clock].

EASTER BUNNY:

What even is the 'BST Hamster' anyway?

BST HAMSTER:

*sigh*

I'm a large, magic hamster who breaks into people's houses at night and changes their clocks so they feel confused.

[Pause. They stand in silence, in the dark, thinking].

[Close up of the Bunny's face. he is still thinking in silence. He looks existentially nauseous].

EASTER BUNNY:

Do you ever feel your life makes no sense?

[Close up of the BST Hamster. He looks the same - silent, horrified].

BST HAMSTER:

Yeah.

[They stand in the silent living, dark room, in depressed silence.]

[Ends]

Pigeon milk.
A six panel comic. In panel 1, a banner says "Pigeons make milk" and a smaller banner says "A fact you didn't need to know". A pigeon stands looking at the reader next to a carton of milk. In panel 2, the text says "Like mammals, pigeons feed milk to their babies. Both male and female pigeons produce it." Two pigeons sit next to their pink and gray babies, all looking happy, and one of the parents says, "Teamwork." In panel 3, the text says "Pigeons don't have nipples. They make milk in a part of their esophagus and regurgitate it." Two pigeons stand next to each other, one with a cow udder and one with a line of nipples down its chest, with red X's next to them. In panel 3, the text says "Amazingly, it evolved independently from mammal milk but it's triggered by the same hormone, prolactin." A black and white dairy cow looks down at a pigeon, who says "We're not so different, you and I." In panel 5, the text says "Like our milk, it has fats, proteins, immune-supporting substances, and more." A cow foot and a pigeon wing are shown high-fiving, and text says "milk high five". In panel 6, the text says "However, it's very chunky, so don't trust any pigeon to make you a good latte." A white coffee cup steaming with a latte inside is shown with the contents censored, and a pigeon leans into the frame looking proud of itself.

From the Point of View of a Cat ~ Karel Capek (translated by Dora Round - originally published in Intimate Things, 1935)
FROM THE POINT OF VIEW
OF A CAT
This is my Man. I am not afraid of
him. He is very strong, for he eats a great deal; he is an Eater of All Things. What are you eating? Give me some!
He is not beautiful, for he has no fur. Not having enough saliva, he has to wash himself with water. He meows in a harsh voice and a great deal more than necessary. Sometimes in his sleep he purrs.
Let me out!
I don't know how he has made himself Master; perhaps he
has eaten something sublime.
He keeps my rooms clean for me.
In his paws he carries a sharp black claw and he scratches with it on white sheets of paper. That is the only game he plays.
He sleeps at night instead of by day, he cannot see in the dark, he has no pleasures. He never thinks of blood, never dreams of hunting or fighting; he never sings songs of love.
Often at night when / can hear mysterious and magic voices, when / can see that the darkness is all alive, he sits at the table with his head bent and goes on and on, scratching with his black claw on the white papers. Don't imagine that I am at all interested in you. I am only listening to the soft whispering of your claw.
Sometimes the whispering is silent, the poor dull head does not know how to go on playing, and then I am sorry for him and 1 meow softly in sweet and sharp discord. Then my Man picks me up and buries his hot face in my fur. At those times he divines for an instant a glimpse of a higher life, and he sighs with happiness and purrs something which can almost be understood.
But don't think that I am at all interested in you. You have warmed me, and now I will go out again and listen to the dark voices.
Translated by Dora Round; revised by the editor. Originally published in Intimate Things, 1935.

In the 2010s, the Icelandic tv station Channel 2 accidentally added subtitles from a gritty crime drama to an episode of Teletubbies. I have translated some of the highlights
A screenshot of Lala and Po from the teletubbies. The screenshot is clearly taken from someone's phone, as the borders of the tv can be seen, as well as glimpses into the apartment behind them. Po is in bed wrapped up in a blanket. The text below them reads "I know you were high at my mother-in-laws funeral..."More screenshots from the Teletubbies. Lala seems to be upset with a terrified Po. the text below reads "Did you kill the dog? Why would you do that?!"A third screenshot from the Teletubbies, this time the same scene as before. Po is wearing an apron while Lala seems to still be upset at him. The text below reads "You're nothing but a failure of a man."

What is the oldest lullaby or nursery rhyme that...
As far as the earliest we know of, it's another Babylonian tablet, about 4000 years old and most often known as Little Baby in the Dark House. We don't have the music for it, but again, the BBC article has a good go at describing some commonalities of the music that tends to accompany lullabies, so that might inspire you.
The rough translation for that Babylonian lullaby, by the way, is:
Little Baby in the dark house
You have seen the sun rise
Why are you crying?
Why are you screaming?
You have disturbed the house god.
'Who has disturbed me?' says the house god.
'It is the baby who has disturbed you!
'Who scared me?' says the house god.
'The baby has disturbed you, the baby has scared you, making noises like a drunkard who cannot sit still on his stool.
He has disturbed your sleep!
'Call the baby now, says the house god.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
