like to extend some logic around here, he's not stopping them from protesting but 1. you still really don't want the military this close to free speech activity as law enforcement; 2. if he was going to stop them, this is also how that would start

there’s something very midcentury about Ossoff’s look & cadence to me—he reads like the kind of American you’d see in a studio movie about virtuous but angry Americans. I think part of it is that he’s grave when something requires gravity, much like AOC, not trying to ingratiate himself to you

a lot of people are replying with 'what are you going to do about it,' and while every level of government could do more, the powers the *DC City Council* has in this situation are comparatively limited. This isn't just voter intimidation, but an argument for statehood for the District of Columbia.

If you’re sharing an official statement or document from a gov’t or org, I think it really matters to share the link to the statement, not just a screenshot of it. I can of course easily look it up myself, but its not convenience that’s the issue, it’s unsourced screenshots taking on authority

The UN secretary-general is "deeply alarmed" by the new US sanctions on the International Criminal Court and "condemns" them, spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said. "Today’s decision marks a serious blow to our collective pursuit of international criminal justice..."

UN
Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General – on the International Criminal Court
Statements | Spokesperson for the Secretary-General
Delivered by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General

The Secretary-General condemns the announcement of the imposition by the United States of sanctions against the International Criminal Court as an institution.

The Secretary-General is deeply alarmed by the expected impact of today’s sanctions on the International Criminal Court as a whole, and in particular, its continued ability to perform its important mandates, including in relation to the situations referred to it by the Security Council and States Parties to the Rome Statute.

Today’s decision marks a serious blow to our collective pursuit of international criminal justice, of which the ICC is a key pillar. Accountability for international crimes and delivery of justice to victims are central to our global commitment to peace,

I’ve heard Pillay speak a lot but this interview stays with me because of its running thread of living up to the trust placed in you by a community, beginning with going to college on funds raised by her poor neighbors, who, she notes, would surely have loved to see their children go to school too

This is an excellent piece. On the ICC, I would add that the next Democratic administration could lodge an Article 12(3) declaration accepting ICC jurisdiction for the period of the Trump administration; this would not require ratification of the Rome Statute (and so would avoid the Senate)

Couldn’t agree more. Pillay is a champion. We’ve had some luck in the last few years at the OHCHR, but Pillay distinguished herself by her refusal to compromise, her staunch commitment to justice for victims, and most importantly, her refusal to be intimidated by political figures.

This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.

This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.

Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.

Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.

Abolish ICE.
