This is a positive development, full stop. Anti-racism norms matter, elite cues on anti-racism norms matter, a broad political consensus on anti-racism norms matter so a strong signal from the leader of a party which has been blurring red lines lately is good news.

No argument from me. The lifecycle of distributed systems toolboxes: 1. make it harder to shoot your foot 2. make it harder to shoot your foot 3. make it harder to shoot your foot 4. throw it out and invent another that makes is easier for junior devs to (checks notes) shoot their feet

I'm tired.
Screenshot of my Instagram story because it won't fit in the text. In short, we've built social media apps that promote content about male violence only to the victims - - women - - and the men get to read about anything else. And then people wonder why we're angry and triggered while they haven't seen a word about Cornell.

Thing is, this isn’t about any deeply held conviction like ending an occupation or stopping another great injustice. Sarah’s just supporting this guy because he’s the sort of dangerous nutter that will vote for Nigel or Rupert. That’s the really dangerous thing.

Hahaha. Muscovite Russians are whiter than snow and I'm not sure "high trust society" and "social cohesion" are the exact terms sociologists reach for when describing life in Moscow at any point in the last century or three.

People like dhh don’t come from nowhere; they come from a culture where most men in tech expect to have their bad behaviour forgiven and far fewer are ready to apologise or hold each other to account. Enormous appreciation for those few

The Fairford incident is dominating the news cycle - and the right-wing. Over the past 48 hours we’ve seen speculation, insinuation and implication attempt turn a serious story about security into one about immigration. This is a long one. Make some tea.

What happens if you have legitimate concerns about someone else’s legitimate concerns? You’d probably need to have some sort of system to represent that this stuff is complicated. Maybe a debating chamber and votes. Perhaps different voices and views could be represented there.

I don’t understand this “very British/very English” framing. According to the Today programme it was “very English” that a member of the public called the police on seeing something dodgy. I’d no idea this is a specifically English thing. Perhaps we can encourage other countries to adopt this idea?

The RNLI rescued Luftwaffe pilots in WW2 because the organisation is there to 'save life at sea' - it's something to be immensely proud of. But as I've said many times before Farage and Co don't seem to have pride in Britain and its institutions beyond flags and crap Enoch Powell said 60 years ago.

It is incredibly important that political violence does not succeed. The far-right mob that shut down Portsmouth wanted this outcome. If the state wishes to avoid more of these actions, it needs to make sure this RNLI branch reopens *immediately*, or as close to that as humanly possible.

And it runs into a fundamental problem right from the start. AI systems of the kind they discuss are provably non-deterministic. And guardrails are essentially the Halting Problem in a trench coat and dark glasses So it fails from the start.
1.1 Objectives of Humanist AI
The premise of Humanist Al is simple. The purpose of technology is to serve humanity, and any technology that cannot remain within human control should be rejected.
We believe this is a commonsense view and most people share it.

great journalism by Devon Live here, noting very fairly that the idea that traffic lights can emit death rays has not been independently established
The group also disputes the suggestion that the equipment is simply used to detect pedestrians or assist with traffic flow.
According to the Blade Runners, the devices can "kill humans when focusing on a target"
However, the medical and technological claims made by the group have not been independently established and remain allegations made by the Blade Runners.

“Understandable”
A group of masked agitators gathered outside a four-star hotel in Portsmouth after reports a group of asylum seekers had been taken there, when it was in fact Pakistan's under-19 cricket team on a tour.
George Madgwick, a Reform councillor called to the hotel to mediate between staff and the assembled crowd, said it was a "massively unfortunate incident".
Madgwick, who leads the Reform group on Hampshire council and whose ward includes the four-star Marriott hotel, said he nonetheless believed the cident was understandable given recent coverage of asylum seekers arriving in the city via small boats.
