A new security report from King County Metro shows that reported security incidents on buses are now less common than they were PRE-PANDEMIC, even after adjusting for somewhat lower bus ridership. In 2019, Metro saw 64 incidents per million boardings. In 2026 that number has dropped below 60.

I feel like we’ve lost the script on “rogue AI models“. These companies have a responsibility to make safe products (like any other). Ford can’t make cars that sometimes listen to drivers. Oreos can’t occasionally contain poison etc.

Forgiving infrastructure design is essential, especially for people outside of cars. No one should be subject to the death penalty for falling off of their bike or tripping while walking. A proper buffer is a life insurance policy.

Walking around downtown Vancouver with an out-of-town urbanist friend, I can’t help pointing out the many high density streets with generous street trees creating “kissing canopies” above sidewalks, greening, cooling & cleaning the street. Even 5+ rows of trees on many streets. His mind was blown.
Inner yard trees, outer yard trees, and street trees all on a downtown Vancouver street. The most surprising thing is that there’s a full-size urban Costco store underneath that.5 rows of trees plus extra yard trees on this Yaletown street.Look at that tree canopy over the sidewalk. Plus a bike lane separation where trees, and extra yard trees and plantings, all on just that side of the street.

Something I think people are missing after Wilson successfully banned junk fees. 1. This closes the loophole that allowed landlords to raise rents higher than permitted by state law via raising/adding fees instead of the base rent. (Sudden monthly $250 “valet” trash, anyone??)

We need to regulate the height of vehicles in the country. This truck outside my building is massive. I’m 5’10” and the hood is at my neck! You could fit a school bus worth of children in his blind spots.

The rise of larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, with their taller hoods and larger blind zones, has contributed to a 75% increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths since 2009. Until we design better streets and ban these vehicles, people outside these vehicles will keep dying.

As a public service, I thought I'd offer a little constructive criticism of the most popular styles of bike racks, since it appears that the entities that manufacture and install these racks are clueless about the needs of actual bike riders.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque: "This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
Bronze plaque saying "A Letter to the Future. Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. Bruce Harrell can still lose the Seattle mayoral race if late ballots break significantly for Katie Wilson
Those who aren't steeped in Emerald City politics might look at the initial results for Mayor of Seattle and conclude the incumbent has won reelection. But the challenger can still win with a late ballot surge. That's not only possible or plausible, it's probable.

Minneapolis built more housing than any other major Midwest city & it’s not a mystery why. They allowed modest density housing types city-wide, cut regressive parking mandates, and made it easier to build apartments near transit. The results: more homes + slowed rent growth.
