A new security report from King County Metro shows that reported security incidents on buses are now less common than they were PRE-PANDEMIC, even after adjusting for somewhat lower bus ridership. In 2019, Metro saw 64 incidents per million boardings. In 2026 that number has dropped below 60.
Chart showing Coordinator Service Records per million boardings starting at 64 on all routes in 2019The same chart in 2024 to 2026 showing the line dropping to less than 60

To be clear this new approach is still all underground, just shallower and smaller (I believe). But yes, less excavation is better

Man I love seeing ST find such big cost savings. I’m convinced cut & cover w/shallower stations are an underutilized approach. Hoping the enterprise initiative finds more of these 🤞

Social media harms democracy by spreading rumors, survey shows
A growing number of people think social media manipulates and divides people and harms democracy, Pew Research Center said on Thursday, echoing rising concern and tighter scrutiny across ‌the world.

Can we also maintain our existing public restrooms better? The one at Gas Works was the mess last time I was in there. Can we see a map of expected locations for the new restrooms too? Thanks Katie!!

I’m not even against all AI tools. I just wanna know why all consumer protections seem to have gone out the window. A handful of Samsung phone batteries explode, and suddenly the entire model is recalled then cancelled.

It’s like we’ve all bought into their marketing hype that these models are superhuman and about to take over. Instead of just viewing them as a powerful product that’s sometimes not safe enough for consumers, or frankly these companies own safeguards.

Eric @ericpnw77.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I feel like we’ve lost the script on “rogue AI models“. These companies have a responsibility to make safe products (like any other). Ford can’t make cars that sometimes listen to drivers. Oreos can’t occasionally contain poison etc.

Why is this happening now? What’s different vs a few years ago?

Look I love Seattle, but 4th in the world?! And San Jose being on the list at all?? They must be weighting high-paying jobs quite heavily. That would explain why Vancouver, BC isn’t mentioned

Thanks! I also see you covered that in your article. Appreciate the work you do 😊

Will the mayor’s full budget proposal be released tomorrow or is that later in the process?

I do like these, though my favorite is when there’s a step up onto a modest porch. Let me set up a couple chairs or place a few planters out 😊

I wonder why it was doing so much better in June compared to last year. Were other improvements in place before the SLU eastbound bus lanes?

Forgiving infrastructure design is essential, especially for people outside of cars. No one should be subject to the death penalty for falling off of their bike or tripping while walking. A proper buffer is a life insurance policy.

These are great improvements! I will say, drivers flying through a crosswalk at 40+ MPH in a 25 zone still leaves a lot to be desired. I hope WSDOT and SDOT continue working on improving safety/slowing vehicles down

More than Harrell built in 4 years as mayor 👀. But yeah I wish there was faster progress here. I’m holding out hope

And RTD’s system seemed designed for suburbanites commuting into downtown, not for actual city dwellers.

Becoming europilled — behold the urban secure bike parking **with a green roof** it’s so cute
Cobblestone street in Aachen, Germany with a rectangular bike locker that’s container shaped. A bicyclist passes to the left of the container. Small green succulents planted in tight rows on a growing surface on the top of the bike locker. Buildings in the distance.

Slightly tangential but I wish we’d bring back emissions testing. Make sure these vehicles are not illegally modified (noise, pollution, safety, etc) and then only provide new tabs when they meet the law. Quieter streets, less pollution, more money for ST. That’s my Ted talk 😆

I’m biased, but I feel like connecting to nearby neighborhoods could be the next focus. Capitol Hill is dense but has only one 🚲 connection to downtown.

Is this the share of all Seattle workers, regardless of where they live? Or only Seattle workers that live in the city? Or some other combo 😅

To that end, I feel like requiring all these data centers be powered by renewables would have been a great way to leverage the insane amount of investment happening. Could have created entire solar/battery industries all using investor cash. Sigh

I think one positive is that the single stair option allows for cross ventilation w/in a unit. Usually apartments in double-loaded corridors one have one window

I’m convinced Dems just don’t know how to message. Biden passed a lot of good legislation that the average person didn’t see/feel. Hard to focus on the CHIPS act, infrastructure bill when rent/food rise. Hope Dems take a Mamdani approach. Freeze rent, tax rich, etc are all easy to understand

Any idea why it varies so much? I’m struggling to see how DC can build parking for so much less than Seattle. Soil conditions? Earthquakes? EV charging?

I am curious if a per capita measure would be helpful? The city is much larger today than in 2012. Regardless love to see more people on bikes and using the new infrastructure! 🚲

Walking around downtown Vancouver with an out-of-town urbanist friend, I can’t help pointing out the many high density streets with generous street trees creating “kissing canopies” above sidewalks, greening, cooling & cleaning the street. Even 5+ rows of trees on many streets. His mind was blown.
Inner yard trees, outer yard trees, and street trees all on a downtown Vancouver street. The most surprising thing is that there’s a full-size urban Costco store underneath that.5 rows of trees plus extra yard trees on this Yaletown street.Look at that tree canopy over the sidewalk. Plus a bike lane separation where trees, and extra yard trees and plantings, all on just that side of the street.

2. Landlords will likely just build these costs into the rent, which is actually GOOD for renters bc the rent itself is regulated and can only go so high each year. A rare w for transparency and creating competition, me thinks.

Something I think people are missing after Wilson successfully banned junk fees. 1. This closes the loophole that allowed landlords to raise rents higher than permitted by state law via raising/adding fees instead of the base rent. (Sudden monthly $250 “valet” trash, anyone??)

So much hate for fare gates in the comments. I support them - they’re quite common around the world. Big maintenance savings and increased fare compliance are genuinely good things for the system. And a 2-5 year ROI makes this an easy yes.

The rent complaint is so weird. Did he not know anything about Seattle when he took the job? Who takes a job in a new city without looking at housing costs?

Eric @ericpnw77.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I feel like everyone’s missing the fact that the transit option gets you home at 6 AM, leaving the airport at just before midnight (!). The time savings versus driving is bad enough, but dang. We need better!
