Sat in on an Italian language class, watched some Bocce, looked over a collection of historic photos, and watched the Grape Stomp at Festa Italiana this weekend at Seattle Center. Grateful to the Italian community in Seattle for putting this on every year.

A random thought: are taller ceilings in Seattle townhomes worth it if they require longer staircases taking up valuable floor space?

Haven’t seen Sol perform since my college days helping him promote his show at the Showbox. This is cool as hell.

Pound for pound, give me North Beacon Hill’s food scene over anywhere else in Seattle. There aren’t a thousand options, but everything on the hill is good to elite.

“The Fir” at 1906 20th Ave S looks like site clearance is underway, hopefully to begin construction. 204 units, 4k sq ft of retail, and 80 parking spots coming to North Rainier. This project was supposed to begin in Q2 2025.

I have some fresh ideas for what I think could be a pretty cool interactive mapping website for this history, but I’m not sure that I possess the technical skills to readily make this happen.

Another large mixed-use project planned in the North Rainier corridor. The neighborhood keeps the tally going.

Recently, I found where my great-grandmother lived in Downtown Renton via school census records (very cool these were done yearly!). 637 Morris Ave S. Built 1915. Simple enough. But when I went to look at the 1936 Aerial, nothing was there. 1927 Sanborn map, the house wasn’t there.

City riding has never been so simple. With a one size-fits-all frame, strong, smooth Bosch motor power up to 28 mph, and a confident upright riding position, all you have to do is pedal.

Look at those views from the new affordable housing project atop Beacon Hill. Am I selfish for wishing we’d get some more rooftop restaurants and bars outside of downtown in this city?

I’d love to know how this new construction townhome project in my neighborhood got away with a lazy, cheap asphalt sidewalk when every other new construction project pours a concrete sidewalk to city specs.

Today was a great day living in the city. 7 AM, walk the dogs thru the neighborhood 10 AM, bike to the central library to read some old history books 12 PM, watch the Dawgs play on my rooftop deck. Bike to get tacos and check out the Farmers Market at half. 5 PM, bike to the Jazz Festival.

If I didn’t want Sam Darnold to get hurt to open the season, I would have simply kept Bittersweet Symphony as the song coming out of the tunnel instead of changing it to Nirvana. Don’t mess with the vibes like that.

In 1923, Washington State saw its largest KKK rally at People’s Park in the Renton Junction area less than one mile west of this community. At this “Konvention,” tens of thousands of people showed up to espouse their hatred for immigrants and people of color among other groups.

I had a moment so I dug through the census. 45% of the 186 people who lived in Earlington Gardens (the Flats and the western portion of Talbot Hill) in 1930 were Italian. 83% of the community lived in Immigrant households.

Why don’t we see more staircases like this (is there a name for it?) in Seattle townhomes where space is at a premium? Feel like it takes up less square footage than a typical staircase.

This means the start of the school year looks different than families planned for. I know that is stressful. So, we are not waiting. I have directed @seattleparks.bsky.social to open 4 community centers across Seattle to provide parents with childcare: Meadowbrook, Montlake, Rainier, and South Park.

The average tenure for Superintendents is 3-5 years. I’d hazard a guess that going to war with the teachers’ union with such recklessness dramatically shortens expended tenure.

Amazing to me how I live 2 miles from the heart of downtown and it’s considered an inner city neighborhood, but go to Europe and you can be in a large city (ex: Torino) and 2 miles from downtown and you’re as close to cow pastures as you are to the urban center.

Digging through more family history last night. I had known one of my great-grandmother’s cousins was a partigiano killed during WWII. The SS caught wind of political resistance in the Lanzo valleys north of Torino. As they gained control, firing squads killed a handful of partigiani.
