Internally displaced southern queer refugee. All my homies hate landlords, car dependency, and exclusionary housing policy. Housing policy is community, environmental policy, transit policy, and (anti-) segregation policy

This sort of stuff makes me want to scream. The cost bloat is in *capital projects* not in operations! Capital projects are bloated because of a complex web of balkanized permitting processes, the byzantine and inconsistent nature of federal grant funding, and outsourcing talent to consultants.

Our city is once again facing a contentious budget season, but it doesn't have to be this way. Our government could legalize more homes, bringing the cost of living down for everyone while growing the total tax base. citythatworks.substack.com/p/budget-tal...

Here's Ald. Lopez's latest tirade blaming the Archer traffic safety project for congestion, reduced sales. In reality, major factors are a massive utility project, and ICE crackdowns, for which Lopez attended a closed-door planning meeting with the Border Czar, organized by a Proud Boys associate.

What Wrigleyville needs is bus lanes. Game days shouldn't fuck over every single bus nearby, then folks could actually arrive in space efficient ways that don't ruin every bus nearby for every rider along the route. Folks at Ashland & 28th shouldn't have their bus gutted by a Cubs game.

Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.

My YIMBY take: Every trans 18 year old who is stuck living w unsupportive family should be able to afford an apartment in a vibrant urban space w transit on a min wage job. (+raise the min wage). Build so much housing that that is the norm. Same for others stuck in bad situations

We need to handle reroutes better. As is a reroute that adds enough % to a trip just breaks the entire route. I saw 4 49bs stacked up at the Damen brown line (rerouted end point) when I was there earlier.

took a crack at figuring out bus speed on Michigan Ave Mansueto data as before. 30 days (6/28 to 7/28). Plotting minutes per mile—higher is slower/more time can definitely make the case for extension to Mag Mile. but NB between Ida B Wells & Wacker is BAD when it's bad
Speed (or its inverse, minutes per mile) plotted for Michigan Ave bus stops, for both northbound (left panel) and southbound (right panel), for Mon-Thu between 3-6 pm. Plot goes from Roosevelt to Chicago Ave.

Northbound:
Median speed is ~12 mph at Roosevelt, and decreases to ~6 mph between Ida B. Wells and Madison, and stays there until Chicago. 95th percentile in min/mi (5th percentile in speed) is ~10 at Roosevelt and rises to ~28 just south of Madison, and stays above 20 for most of the way until Chicago.

Southbound:
Median speed is ~5 mph at Chicago, and steadily increases to ~12 mph at Roosevelt. 95th percentile in min/mi (5th percentile in speed) is ~21 at Chicago, peaks at ~32 between Madison and Wacker, and decreases to ~12 at Roosevelt.Speed (or its inverse, minutes per mile) plotted for Michigan Ave bus stops, for both northbound (left panel) and southbound (right panel), for Fri between 3-6 pm. Plot goes from Roosevelt to Chicago Ave.

Northbound:
Median speed is ~10 mph at Roosevelt, and decreases to ~5 mph between Ida B. Wells and Madison, and stays there until Chicago. 95th percentile in min/mi (5th percentile in speed) is ~12 at Roosevelt and rises to ~30 just south of Madison, and stays ~19 for most of the way until Chicago.

Southbound:
Median speed is ~5 mph at Chicago, and steadily increases to ~10 mph at Roosevelt. 95th percentile in min/mi (5th percentile in speed) is ~25 at Chicago, peaks at ~31 between Madison and Wacker, and decreases to ~12 at Roosevelt.Speed (or its inverse, minutes per mile) plotted for Michigan Ave bus stops, for both northbound (left panel) and southbound (right panel), for Sat-Sun between 3-6 pm. Plot goes from Roosevelt to Chicago Ave.

Northbound:
Median speed is ~10 mph at Roosevelt, and decreases to ~5 mph around Madison, and goes back up to ~6 mph before Wacker and mostly stays there until Chicago. 95th percentile in min/mi (5th percentile in speed) is ~15 at Roosevelt and rises to ~39 just south of Madison, and stays between 15-20 from Wacker to Chicago.

Southbound:
Median speed is ~5 mph at Chicago, and steadily increases to ~10 mph at Roosevelt. 95th percentile in min/mi (5th percentile in speed) is ~21 at Chicago, there are no large peaks, and steadily decreases to ~10 at Roosevelt.
