An example of bad design in Bellevue. 👍 Leading pedestrian interval 👎 Without a “no turn on red,” this creates a dangerous conflict.

Bellevue's definitely not ditching parking mandates, but just the fact that folks on the Bellevue council are saying things like this seems like a major shift compared to just a few years ago.
"I am personally interested in exploring citywide elimination of parking minimums. According to the research I did, cities like Austin, San Jose, Buffalo, had done this and seen a tremendous amount of economic boost as a result of that. So I do want us to, to be clear, I think if we did that now, it might cause a little bit of chaos," Briar said. "But I do want us eventually to see a city that is comprehensively integrated and allows end-to-end walkability as an effective mode of transportation for senior citizens, for young kids waiting at the bus stop, for for any resident or visitor of Bellevue."

Right now the Kirkland Council looks incredibly divided on housing and might be the most divided council on the Eastside on this issue. Which is a remarkable fact in a city where voters fairly clearly picked pro-housing candidates last November over density skeptics.

This finally came up for a vote again at the Kirkland Council tonight, after the deadlocked vote in June. It failed 3-4. The hope was that raising the IZ threshold in low-density zones would spur more middle housing, but staff recommended against the move due to the revenue IZ generates.
