This is heartbreaking, and I think the correct angle of attack. Prisoners’ rights are broadly unpopular, so focus on the collateral damage. Their kids didn’t do anything to deserve this.

If you are eligible to vote in the MA Democratic primary and you haven't yet, I urge you to get out and vote for Ed Markey. Moulton is a wholly unacceptable choice for Senate and would replace a reliable progressive with a self-interested centrist.

My favorite (derogatory) traffic violence trope is how following a crash there's always some neighbor or witness talking about the fact that people regularly speed where a person was hit. I will always call this out because it reinforces that these are not accidents. www.wcvb.com/article/driv...
"There's cars that go way too fast down this street. I swear they go 40 to 50 miles per hour sometimes. It's like one long straightaway. There's nothing to deter cars from slowing down at all," Bartko said. "Students live around here. I live with a bunch of students—they've got to cross this road every day just to get to school."

Anyway, preaching to the choir here: Vote Ed Markey for many reasons, but a big one for me is that I don't trust Seth Moulton. The man simply senses which way the wind is blowing and changes his campaign rhetoric accordingly. Moulton doesn't actually believe in anything besides the pursuit of power.

okay fine if we’re doing speed camera discourse, here’s my take as a Brit/american: the British system of almost entirely fixed location cameras at high risk points is much better at improving safety and less discriminatory than cops with radar guns looking for Black folk to pull over

I have a hypothesis brewing in my head, that the more vibes-based an election is the harder it's gonna be to poll because vibes are inherently unstable. Primary elections, being between people under the same party umbrella with a lot of similar policy opinions, are going to magnify vibes effects.

Statement from @bikeboston.bsky.social, @streetsboston.bsky.social, and @walkmass.bsky.social about Louisa Gag, who was hit and killed by a driver today. Yet another life taken because our society and leaders refuse to address the destruction wrought by cars.
We are devastated by the loss of Boston resident and transportation planner, Louisa Gag. On Thursday morning, a driver struck and killed Louisa on her bicycle commute to city hall along Tremont Street near Roxbury Crossing.
Louisa Gag is not just a number on a spreadsheet; she was a champion for safer streets, a vibrant part of the planning and advocacy community, and a person dedicated to fixing the very system that failed her.
MASSACHUSETTS VISION ZERO COALITION
Prior to joining the city of Boston's Transportation Department, Louisa graduated with a masters from the Tufts Urban and Environmental Planning and Policy program and worked at Livable Streets Alliance. Our hearts are with Louisa, her family, and all her colleagues and friends at BTD, UEP, and in the advocacy community.
Fatalities are a heartbreaking reminder of the safety gaps in our infrastructure. Inaction and needless delays have consequences. Changes must be made to dangerous streets before we lose a community member, not after.
We need safer streets now.

If roughing up a girlfriend and locking her in a room was a virile, authentic a rejection of “smoothgroined” “HR lady” politics, but a rape is too far, then what’s at stake is not a principled rejection of violence against women but a cynical assessment of how much violence a man can get away with.

The 9 Wyman Road project is not a fluke, it’s a sign of successful multifamily zoning
A housing project at 9 Wyman Road in West Cambridge and the reaction from neighbors demonstrates why uniform, citywide upzoning is more equitable than fragmented, piecemeal zoning reform. Before the passage of Cambridge’s Multifamily Zoning last February, 9 Wyman Road was zoned exclusively for “single-family dwellings.” Now,...
