Modern progressivism often finds itself placing endlessly dwelling on the past as the height of morality, and anything that could be consider "moving on" as a grave injustice. People are defined by their heritages for eternity and should forever identify with them first and foremost.

The AAR's "electrification report" is an excellent example of how you can sandbag something to give the desired conclusion, including such hilariously blatant fraud as grouping all non-US electrification as "for passengers" and treating "government funding"...

In this post, I explain what Islamo-leftism is.

It's not a secret Muslim plot to use the left to take over. It's not warmed-over "Judeo-bolshevism", and it's not Iran 1979. In fact, it's almost the opposite.

noah smith: people with real jobs keep telling me that AI isn’t very useful in their professions—here’s why they’re wrong
Noah Smith

I recently had the pleasure of going to a party in Washington D.C. with a number of lawyers, art history professors, and other educated progressive professionals. This provided me with a great opportunity to get out of my west coast tech-and-econ bubble, and talk to intelligent Americans from other regions and other walks of life.
Many of these conversations turned to the topic of artificial intelligence. Not one person that I talked to was positive about the technology. The first man I talked to asked me how "the AI bubble" was going. When I told him that Anthropic was experiencing the fastest revenue growth of any large company in history, and expects to turn an operating profit next quarter, he was astonished. The other folks I talked to were generally dismissive of the potential of AI, and all were concerned about negative effects. One lawyer told me that he knew some people who used it a little bit, but never used it himself. Another said that it was "about as good as a 2nd-year associate", but worried that people's reliance on it would erode their own cognitive abilities.
Various other people asserted that AI was flooding their professions with low-quality workTha art historian was even more negative about
AI. She argued that AI couldn't produce real art, because it lacked human input. When I pointed out the difference between skinfully prompted Al videos and sloppily prompted ones, she did consider it, but it was the first time she had thought about it. She then argued that Al art would deceive people by presenting a distorted version of reality as if it was real. When I pointed out that people had made a similar objection to photography and film, before those were eventually recognized as legitimate and respected art forms, she considered this, but insisted that AI was somehow different.

It’s increasingly hard to take this stuff on the chin. I know, I know that the vast majority of Americans don’t think of us like this and broadly speaking like the UK but it’s an issue that the ones who have these impressions of us are the loudest and most loathsome cunts on the planet.

Crimes against polling here. Why would you not include a don't know for such a low salience issue? The reason to exclude a neutral/don't know/don't care option from preference polls is to squeeze people a bit. This might have value if people likely have an opinion on a topic but not the case here.
Screenshot of xitter post by Luke tryl saying:

"New in today’s Playbook. In a sign of how low trust in politics has become, presented with suggestions Morgan McSweeney faked his phone theft 74% of Brits say that is at least probably true. Agreement spans voters of all main parties."

With picture of polling results for the question "Do you think that the following is true or false? Morgan McSweeney faked the theft of his phone in order to hide the messages between him and Peter Mandelson." With options of definitely and probably true or false, no don't know is shown. All voters split 15, 59, 22, 4 for definitely true, probably true, probably false and definitely false. The headline at the top of the picture is "Three quarters of Britons think Morgan McSweeney faked the theft of his phone"

James Austin @iamesdaustin.bskv.s... 2h

This is excellent and I think very true - the 00s increasingly look like a golden period.

I do wonder if there is something ir weaponising this for Labour - just as Reform and Restore try to do with the 70s and 80s

Luke Tryl @luketrvl.bskv.social 2h

late to this from James Marriott but t's one of the best pieces I've reac this vear because qoing bevond day to day politics/struggles people share n focus groups it captures something bigger we hear - that we've passea our prime & it's all been down hill for years www.thetimes.com/article d123...

What accounts for this failure of nerve? One underrated factor is our proximitv to the golden decades either side of the turn of the millennium. It was not a mythical age of heroes, except perhaps to diehard Blairites, But it may well turn out to have been the all time peak of the western middle class: a period of reliable economic growth, widespread home ownership, expanding democracy and - compared with the rest o1 history - peace. All these trends are now flatlining or in reverse. It is very hard to live in the looming shadow of historv's summit.
