Any political party which tells you money doesn’t buy influence is either lying to you or has never attended a political fundraiser. Currency is access- and that’s for everyone. My opener to Sunday with Lewis Goodall @lbc.co.uk this morning. youtu.be/uLMuirAe--I?...

Astounding story. Reform receives a *second* £36m donation from a crypto billionaire in 48 hours. Christopher Harborne- the £5m benefactor- has matched Ben Delo's money pound for pound. £72m in total. Approaching US politics sort of money. www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/202...

This is smart analysis. I had not thought of it previously, but it would be politically suicidal before the Holborn and St Pancras by-election for the government to go ahead with: 1. More drilling in the North Sea; and 2. Mahmood's immigration reforms.

Almost never feel sad about celebrity deaths- but felt so moved all day today about Dolly Parton. What a woman. The story of America. We’ve recorded a special ep of News Agents about her politics and why she- uniquely- transcended even the bitterest partisan divides. In your feeds at 5pm.

Dolly Parton dead- hard to think of a more famous woman in the world. A few years ago, there was a poll which showed she was the cultural figure both Democrats and Republicans most mutually loved and admired. Virtually unique. Testament to her achievement.

The term “witch hunt” is overused in politics. Perhaps not now. Quite a bit of the British media should ask themselves serious questions as to whether the coverage they gave to this man was remotely proportionate. Likewise there are Qs for Cambridge- and whether they discharged their duty of care.

This should be self evident but clearly isn’t. From @lewisgoodall.com
The problem is not that higher education has failed as an engine of social mobility. It is that, for too long, it has been treated as the only engine. The curriculum is not the problem which is driving our NEET malaise; the weakness of local economies is. Any Labour administration should therefore tread very carefully before dismantling any part of the comprehensive educational settlement created by the Labour governments of the 1960s. Burnham's proposals also misunderstand the multi-layered nature of the modern university, which in many cases is as likely to offer vocational courses as strictly academic ones.
In any case, let's stop the obsession with STEM subjects and
"practical" training. There is already too much snobbery in the assumption that working-class students are somehow less interested in the arts and humanities. And we've never needed those graduates more. In an age in which we are already outsourcing so much of our critical thinking to machines, and in which none of us can be entirely sure of the truth of what we see, where the world's complexity is ever deepening, subjects like philosophy, history, political science, linguistics, classics and literature have rarely been more important.
I'm sure our English graduate prime minister might agree.
