Such a weird take. Presumably the example of lentil has been turned into a lie in the headline because they think their target audience will click to be outranged as they think lentils are too woke or something. They will of course always do this because it has no penalty.

Well this is good to hear, seemed in the balance a bit. The city wide policy on bus gate exemptions will be interesting. The bus gates in this are already massively over-exempted in my view. www.bristol247.com/news-and-fea...

Just cycled home through a thunderstorm that started off at 32°C. Conditions more usually found in the tropics. Meanwhile there are parts of labour grumbling about net zero. Beyond credible.

"Naive governing by opinion poll/focus group because he/advisors lacked any real vision or strategy" is to me probably the best way it can be one lined.

🚨 New research by us! 📣 Most British drivers don't know how dangerous SUVs are to other road users, but adding information to SUV marketing materials seems to do almost nothing to change people's plans to buy SUVs Here's a 🧵 on why harder action is going to be needed 1/10

So much conspiracy stuff on palantir (and certainly at least one of the founders is clearly a few marbles short), but might just be better to focus on that it's solutions just seem to be a bit crap?

Amazing how much this government seems to be both terminally online and completely tech illiterate at the same time. Also politically illiterate - this is superficially popular on naïve simple polling, it will be neutral at best after it fails to achieve its aims and annoys people in the process.

James Bambury @jbambury.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
Oh dear, truly dystopian stuff. With an added dose of statistical incompetence (quantitative abuse of open uncontrolled consultation responses) to go with the technological illiteracy. Plus guaranteed to be a vote loser for anything beyond the short term.

Law is not magic, and prohibitions are not spells Again, politicians think that "banning" something is an end to a problem. At the Empty City: emptycity.substack.com/p/law-is-not...
Law is not magic.

Prohibitions are not spells.

When you make a law against a thing, that thing may not instantly vanish.

It is not as if one points a wand and says something in cod-Latin, and the unwanted thing is thereby extinguished.

The unwanted thing may instead continue, it is just that further instances of that unwanted thing may be attended with different legal and practical consequences.

Constantly astounding how utterly useless at basic stuff this government seems to be. X, especially the political/news parts, is an utter dump of wildly unrepresentative hate and bigotry. Not to mention the actually illegal stuff all over it after musk pared back almost all moderation.

James Bambury @jbambury.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
Well that's definitely not going to cause any problems whatsoever...
Screenshot of paragraph from:

"13.168 Where, regardless of such communications, there is clear evidence of an issue with members of the opposite sex accessing or seeking to access the single or separate-sex service or association in question, it may be legitimate to ask individuals to provide confirmation that they are of the eligible sex by proportionate means. Evidence of such concern might include the individual’s physique or physical appearance, behaviour or concerns raised by other service users. However, service providers, those performing public functions and associations must keep in mind that it is not always possible to be sure of a person’s sex from their appearance. Whether it is legitimate to approach any particular individual to make enquiries about their sex will be a sensitive question that will depend on all the circumstances. "

Eh? They could have just looked at the reaction to sunak binning much of it. The British public love to grumble about stuff costing lots/overrunning, but they dislike it vastly more when that thing is abandoned.

"But blah system works without juries!" All legal systems are different, and protections can be elsewhere in the judicial processs. Just excising juries from our system will not transform at a stroke our system into a continental system.

Seeing a few conclusions being drawn, including extrapolating out things like gain/loss rates, when we've not even had a quarter of seat declarations yet. Much too early to get beyond the broadest of strokes, especially as early declarations are by no means representative of all contests.

Peak time instead of 24hr bus priority is such a "I've no idea about what I'm talking about and haven't given this more than 2 seconds of thought" issue. Sadly it's very widespread and at the local level found in most if not all parties.

James Bambury @jbambury.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
Crimes against polling here. Why would you not include a don't know for such a low salience issue? The reason to exclude a neutral/don't know/don't care option from preference polls is to squeeze people a bit. This might have value if people likely have an opinion on a topic but not the case here.
Screenshot of xitter post by Luke tryl saying:

"New in today’s Playbook. In a sign of how low trust in politics has become, presented with suggestions Morgan McSweeney faked his phone theft 74% of Brits say that is at least probably true. Agreement spans voters of all main parties."

With picture of polling results for the question "Do you think that the following is true or false? Morgan McSweeney faked the theft of his phone in order to hide the messages between him and Peter Mandelson." With options of definitely and probably true or false, no don't know is shown. All voters split 15, 59, 22, 4 for definitely true, probably true, probably false and definitely false. The headline at the top of the picture is "Three quarters of Britons think Morgan McSweeney faked the theft of his phone"

My local school street being a case in point. It *has* removed danger from the area around the gate, but there is now illegal parking/dangerous turning all around the junction 100m away. Theres no way school streets alone can create 'safe routes to school'.

Which is an odd strategy from this government as the resulting dire state of local amenities and services is almost certainly part of the reason their polling is in the gutter* I guess they think this doesn't cross over? *Floating in a puddle as the drain is blocked of course

Parallels here on transport at the local level with the way the national party is approaching immigration. Chasing a vote that is both less significant than they think it is and that is unlikely to vote for them whilst annoying and pushing away the people who might actually vote for them.

This polling finds zero RefUK 2024 voters to Labour Remarkable, almost always get small numbers doing anything in a poll from satisfacters, input errors and a few people just being weird. Labour's chase the reform vote strategy is so astoundingly stupid it somehow doesn't even get those.

Quite, polling consistently showed most expected tax rises (recall this was even of all voters, not just labour ones). Whatever damage to trust in politics was possible from this happened when labour wrote their entirely unrealistic manifesto, not when they inevitably have to break part of it.

I am also fundamentally unconvinced it was a promise which defined an election for the public, given a) there were far greater factors that defined the election and b) most Labour voters themselves already expected the promise would be broken.

33% of the benefit of the fuel duty freeze and of the hundreds of millions spent of vehicle salary sacrifice schemes is for leisure driving, but that doesn't seem to be questioned. It's not low earners who can afford to forego £500 per month from their wages for an EV while saving on tax.
A chart showing the proportion of car trips for different purposes. In 2024 33% of trips were for leisure,19% shopping, 13% for commuting, 12% Other Escort, 10 Education or education escort, 10% personal business and 3% business.

On the latter, there is a tendency within Westminster to massively overweight simplistic issue polling (i.e. support/oppose) and underweight other polling that is far better at explaining voter behaviour (e.g. what their priorities are, valence evaluations, party images, etc.).

I threw a bit of a cautionary on the grn rise to 12% for yougov in the immediate wake of polanski's election as leader as usual for single poll and that applies for this 15% too. However, recent polls do seem to indicate a least a shift from 9-10% to 12-13%.

I'd hoped to be wrong but seems we have transplanted the fantasy transport approach of carrot first nonsense of the Rees adminstration into WECA. Road space is highly limited so the possible carrots on offer without sticks are withered limp and ineffective, this is not hard to understand.

Because daft regulatory reasons the option for farside signals is included in the toucan regs but not the puffin ones. If you want a farside puffin (which you should, because nearside are an abomination) it goes by the rather more more boringly name of 'Pedex'.
