W/E (w or w/o transit service) or M-F, you cannot easily do the trip spur of the moment. Certainly not comparably to driving. That is where transit frequency comes in. 1st time I did this trip took a lot of planning. Easier now w/ familiarity, but still requires planning time. #WeekWithoutDriving

Not only did we really have to watch the clock so we could get back home before the sun went down, it also meant we didn't have time to stop in downtown Vashon for lunch, so some businesses lost out! Better transit doesn't just help non-drivers, it helps everyone. #weekwithoutdriving

If you're able to drive, try to appreciate the challenges we had: carefully choreographed schedules; infrequent buses; no places to sit; and some of us had to take a day off work because the bus to the park only runs during the week. Thanks to everyone for making it worth it! #weekwithoutdriving

We had another great hike w/ @transittrekker.bsky.social, this time on Maury Island! The park is only accessible by bus during the week, but taking the day off was worth it. The weather, the company, and the scenery were all excellent! #weekwithoutdriving

Day 1 of #WeekWithoutDriving and Rapid Ride G is sro but my hiking boots can handle the terrain en route to our #TransitTrek. For me, easy access to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) puts a lot of transit hiking in reach b/c connecting to ferries, express bus routes, reduces the time penalty.
My foot in a hiking boot extended to the bendi part of the bendi boy bus I am on.

I reposted this not only because these are lovely photos but because you can access the trail from many points along the way via transit. Too many to list, really, but easiest is probably Clallam Transit Strait Shot to Discovery Bay or Jamestown stops. Plenty of room for bikes, too.

Showing some work. The getting there plan didn't pan out because the Strait Shot was *really* late. That was OK b/c I was already planning on biking Mora Rd to Three Rivers instead of trying to make bus connections work, but I had to ride at dusk and then in the dark.
A customized travel table for my backpacking trip. It's got some scribbles on it where I had to correct errors or where I wanted to note time between some of the longer transfers. It's just much easier to create this than rely on apps, so I have all the info I need in one place and don't need signal. I just take a photo so I have a back up copy on my phone if needed.

This is the kind of calculation I did when I decided to pay a lot of money for the hiking shuttle (it would have been less if more people had been riding btw). I don't spend this kind of money on a car. So spending $190 (yup) on a shuttle to get to an epic hike was worth it for me.

There's no bus service to Ozette, so I spent some $$ on the Olympic Hiking Shuttle. Friendly, knowledgeable driver and more fantastic scenery. Absolutely worth the investment.
View out the shuttle window, probably near Seiku on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Olympic Hiking Shuttle was waiting for me at Three Rivers. The public bus stops here and while this is not a regular stop for the shuttle, because it is on the way, I was able to arrange to pick it up here instead of having to go to Third Beach. Which was nice because it was just a 10-minute walk from my hosts' house.

The road to Rialto is closed for repairs so I had to go in at Ozette, which meant an overnight near La Push. I could have camped at Mora but a friend whose parents have a little house out there offered their hospitality; I accepted. I highly recommend baby deer tocks with your morning coffee.
POV out a kitchen window as a baby deer with perfect tocks trots past foraging in the yard. There were a doe and two babies and yes, they startled me at first because the doe was right there at the window when I first noticed her. Then tables turned and I spooked them so I closed the drapes for a while so they could eat in peace.

Really wanted to make up for earlier backpacking trip getting smoked out by wildfires and poor AQ. I've done plenty of solo bikepacking trips but never done a solo backpacking trip. It was time!
View out bus windows to Hood Canal on a bright and sunny late summer afternoon. There are other passengers and most of them are looking out the window. Undercarriage luggage on the Clallam Transit Strait Shot (route 123). I accepted the gracious hospitality of friends' parents to use their house near La Push as a base and so I brought not only my backpacking pack but my folding bike and a few extra items in small panniers. There is plenty of room in the luggage area under the coach. People boarding the Strait Shot. The man and kid ahead of me were father and son doing some kind of outing via bus!

Metro's response? This would require something called a backhaul schedule, which would increase service hours, which costs $. Will be taking a different tack on this aimed at how Metro addresses rural transit & mobility overall, based on convo w/ the head of the rural transit agency out there.

Even unintentional. I've had a stressful week, for reasons, & so an extra-full/distracted brain, so quite a few occasions that I did weird things/didn't see stuff/ that normally I'd never miss. Been thinking a lot about what if I was driving in that state and how easy it would be to cause damage.
