Mayor of Bothell. Because the world won't change itself. Curious about land use and transportation. Rides a bike to boring meetings.

Today is a day that ends in Y which means it's a good day to abolish the death penalty, please as soon as possible.

If critics can't come up with any truthful way to criticize policy, that's usually a good sign you're doing righteous work.

Also: In the election after we eliminated parking minimums completely, the last two people who were generally opposed to the direction we've been going declined to run for their seat again. The people who were going to run against them ran unopposed and are now my colleagues.

Every close election it feels like sometime complains that we take the time to count all the votes, which really seems central to the whole democracy thing.

We know that one of the best things we can do for the environment is to build dense housing in walkable neighborhoods with robust transit. Sprawl not only results in loss of forests and farmland, it increases green house gases and contributes to driving which results in more toxic runoff from tires

Turns out people on the Eastside really want to ride transit. ❤️
0333
Mason Thompson @masonthompson.bsky.social · 04/06/2026
Adding on, the argument is totally disingunous. Transit is put where housing and destinations exist. Demanding additional transit before housing or destinations is just a way to say "don't build anything else here."

The language people use to discuss housing is wild. Nobody elected neighborhoods. Neighborhoods, like corporations, aren't people. They don't need tools. This person just doesn't want any more new neighbors, they know that isn't very neighborly, so they try to find words that sound righteous.

This. It's important to call out disingenuous, unserious arguments against housing for what they are. Using faux environmental rhetoric to prevent denser housing should be laughed out of any room. Apartments in cities are an environmental win.

Issaquah City Council has a vacancy we'll be filling soon. Applications for appointment close 4/1. We have a growing majority focused on housing, walkability, and transit, and want to keep that momentum. If you're an Issaquah resident who's ready to help build a better Eastside, apply or reach out!

The formers in Bothell tried to brand us the same way. It's what people who have no actual argument that resonates with voters do. Just flail around making stuff up in public comment. It's embarrassing for them, especially with the repudiation they got from Woodinville voters a few months ago.

People don't buy homes, they finance them. They don't buy a dollar amount, they buy a payment. And we compete with each other for those homes. It feels like a 50 year mortgage is going to end up subsidizing demand so we end up with the same payments, just 20 years more of payments.

Next week's council elections in Kirkland really do deserve more regional attention. An anti-growth advocacy group is promoting a full slate of candidates who are pledging to "protect neighborhoods." The outcome could tip the city in a very reactionary direction. www.theurbanist.org/2025/10/28/k...

One thing I love about parking reform is how it moves beyond old partisan stereotypes. We should be pro regulation *and* deregulation if the result of either is making sure our communities and our kids have what they need to thrive into the future. More of what we want, less of what we don't.

Government should do cool stuff like design the best skate park in the area with a roof over top of it. Our community should be a lot of fun to live in. Thanks to Bothell Parks and Grindline for listening to our skate community and giving them something to be excited about!

If it takes effect tomorrow, today is the last time it will be a talking point. We adopted middle housing over a year ago. The minute it was adopted, the people who organized against it said they loved middle housing when they were organizing against adopting the comp plan.
