Discworld QOTD, from Unseen Academicals
“You see, the thing about football is that it is not about football. It is a most fascinating multi-dimensional philosophy, an extrusion, as it were, of what Doctor Maspinder promulgated in Das Meer von Unvermeidlichkeit. Now, you would say to me, I am sure,” he went on, “What of the 4–4–2 or even the 4–1–2–1–2, yes? And my answer to that would be, there is only the one. Traditionally we say there are eleven players in the team, but that is because of our rather feeble perceptions. In truth, there is only the one and therefore, I would say,” he gave a little laugh, “daring to adapt a line from The Doors of Deception: it does not matter whether you win or lose so long as you score the most goals.”

The only good thing to come out of the dipshit Odyssey discourse is that at one point I commented “if we’re worried about accuracy, then Jason Mantzoukas should be playing Odysseus,” and now I can’t get it out of my head 😄
Impressively-Greek-looking Mantzoukas with long, wild hair and crazy beard, wearing a leather jacket and laughing at something off-camera.

Why I picked Spain? Spain formally recognizes the State of Palestine, having officially granted statehood on May 28, 2024, alongside Ireland and Norway. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated his support for a viable two-state solution. Spain is taking in refugees. The flotilla!!! I also love Yamal.

Discworld QOTD, from Lords and Ladies
She’d have to stop thinking like this. She seemed to have spent her whole life trying to make herself small, trying to be polite, apologizing when people walked over her, trying to be good-mannered. And what had happened? People had treated her as if she was small and polite and good-mannered. (LL)

Today is still, officially, Washington's Birthday, but if you're going to call it the other thing I suggest styling it, apostropheless, as Presidents Day—that is, a day of and about presidents, not owned by them. Also, Washington's Birthday never falls on Washington's birthday.

“I imagine if this was a homeless shelter or a mental health center, you would find a way to stop it. You would pull out all the stops." www.welcometohellworld.com/a-surprise-z...
Resident Jon Mannella challenged the lie that immigration agents target the “worst of the worse” and questioned why DHS and the City of Surprise would place them next to multiple schools if this smear was true.

“I imagine if this was a homeless shelter or a mental health center, you would find a way to stop it. You would pull out all the stops. You would pull out the tomes of English common law, dust them off, and try to find some appendix in there to make sure you didn’t have to build this building. Well just pretend that it’s that and put a stop to it.”

Some jawdropping CBP crime statistics here...
Criminality is so rampant inside CBP that it has seen one of its own agents or officers arrested every 24 to 36 hours since 2005. CBP’s misconduct scandal is so long-running that today it would be old enough to drink.

In total, according to CBP’s own discipline reports, over the 20 years from 2005 to 2024 — the last year numbers are available — at least 4,913 CBP officers and Border Patrol agents have been arrested themselves, some multiple times. (In 2018 alone, a single CBP employee was arrested five times.) To put that number in perspective:

• The population of CBP agents and officers who have been arrested would make it roughly the nation’s fourth largest police department — equal to the size of the entire Philadelphia police.

• Indeed, for much of the 2010s and likely before and since, it appears the crime rate of CBP agents and offices was higher PER CAPITA than the crime rate of undocumented immigrants in the United States.

One of the hardest things to do is bring campaign-level communications to the work of governance, and snowstorms are notoriously one of the biggest litmus tests that less-engaged voters use to judge mayoral administrations. This is an excellent way to communicate.

Feels like society’s really broken down in the US in a way that’s deeply traumatic. But also there are college students knocking on doors asking for shovels (they’re not well-prepared) and helping trapped motorists by shoveling and pushing out cars. Up to 24 of them now, wandering streets together
