There are two types of people in the world-- those who like manakins and those who haven't met them yet (this gif isn't the correct species but you get it). I'm really excited to watch Kristen's defense and learn more about manakins and rainfall, and you're invited to it too!

The park also had at least two Black-throated Blue Warblers, who don't tuck themselves into the vegetation as thoroughly as Common Yellowthroats but do love to move very quickly and stay in the shadows where it is hard to get decent photos. I love them but ooof they also frustrated me today haha
Four blurry photos of Black-throated Blue Warblers. This is the male type plumage; the bird is deep blue on the head, back, wings, and tail, shining lighter blue where the light hits the feathers. He has a black face and throat, and a white belly with white patches on his wings. He is blurry and tucked among the low vegetation, near the ground.Female plumage type Black-throated Blue Warbler. She is more subtle, an olive green-yellow overall, with soft white lines on her face and an off-white handkerchief wing patch where the male has a white wing patch. She is scooting her way up a small branch between large tree trunks.Female-type plumage again, she is on a more bare branch with lovely fall foliage behind her. You can see a hint of blue in her darker olive green wings and back, with lighter yellow below, and now her wing patch looks more white.Head-on view of the male plumage type, showing off his black face, throat, and sides, white belly, and blue back.

My backyard park was just loaded with migrating Common Yellowthroats today, a minimum of six of them in one ~20 meter stretch of trail. Just a photographer's nightmare, they're such spooky and painful little warblers, constantly in motion but almost always staying tucked in the vegetation
Four photos of tiny olive green birds with yellow on the throat and breast, pink legs, and variable faces based on their age and sex. They are almost always in motion or tucked deep in the vegetation. This is an older male plumage type individual, with a black Zorro mask and a gray-white eyebrow on his face. This is an individual with more female type plumage, no black on her face but instead a subtle white eye ring and a yellow throat. She's tucked among some flowers, mostly behind vegetation.Another paler individual, with a hint of darker feathers on the face where the mask will grow in but mostly mask-free and olive green instead, again about fifty percent obscured by vegetation.Male type plumage bird walking on a fallen log, obscured by some saplings in front.

It is October now babyyyyy and around here (Central Ohio USA) that means Sparrow Time™️ There were no sparrows in my backyard park yesterday, and now there are flocks of White-throated Sparrows with some Dark-eyed Juncos mixed in, plus a Swamp Sparrow and Eastern Towhee
White-throated Sparrow, a gray and brown bird with a white throat and striking gray, yellow, white, and black stripes on its head. It is perched among some fall foliage. Dark-eyed Junco, a slate gray bird with a white belly and a pink beak, perched on a little knob on an otherwise branch-free tree stem.

people who understand baking: a question I have oven access (after years without thanks to landlords who don't think ovens are important). I want to bake frozen pizzas on some sort of sheet/pan but still get the crispiness of pan-free baking. Does any sheet/pan come close to that?

I walked fewer than 2,000 steps, briefly birding this afternoon little enough movement, back and forth across my yard, that I counted it as a "stationary" list on eBird yet I still managed to slip on a wet slope, overextend my knee, and mess up something in my thigh (vastus medialis?)

This is bad and it sucks, obviously. I'm guessing most of us doing this work (protesting, observing) correctly assumed this was the case. It'll likely continue to be the case. A short-term solution? We all need to get out there. These data are less relevant if we're all in the database.

I can't say I love the party culture at Ohio State, mostly because I live amongst the undergrads and I'm too old for the noise (but also because I'm anxious for their safety) but they're so subdued lately that I'm getting more anxious about the *lack* of party. Too depressed, too broke?

my urban backyard is small (~30m x 20m) but with vertical structure from century-old oaks so good for dark understory migrating birds (Ovenbirds, Black-throated Blue, Mourning, and Canada Warblers) but horrible for photography on gloomy days grateful for the friendly pals who get close, stay still

Abolish the death penalty. Not just for Christa Pike and Allan Miller, but for every victim of premeditated state murder who went before and every one yet to come. Retribution is not justice; it is barbarism.

The death penalty is a moral abomination. State-sanctioned barbarism pushed by incompetent morons and sanctioned by the Supreme Court. Absolute ghoul shit. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
The lone woman on Tennessee's death row was still alive after she was administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said in a motion seeking to halt her execution Wednesday night, a stunning development after the Supreme Court had stepped in to allow the state to put her to death.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said
"executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said in a federal court filing.
They said Pike "has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat," and that curtains to the death chamber "have gone down twice."

I don't often use binoculars for my local birding, as everything is close so I don't need them to collect accurate data about bird presence but that means sometimes I forget they're more than just a good tool for data collection. Looked at a cardinal through bins today and thought "ooo that's nice"

I think the scale of the problems we face require a big tent, that we'll need to put aside some ideological differences to respond en masse but there are some fucking limits (this is a communication from my local ICE watch, doing double duty as Klan watch at the moment I guess)
Facebook post from Columbus Ohio, showing an image of anti-Flock surveillance posters seemingly created by a local KKK chapter, reading "Neighborhood watch: no need for flock when were on the block. You can sleep sound tonight the Klan is awake, if you can't join us support us." And yes they printed posters that say "when were on the block" instead of "when we're on the block." The local ICE watch shared an image of those posters with overlayed text that reads "community members are reporting anti-flock Klan recruitment flyers posted by Trinity Knights KKK likely last night in Columbus Ohio. Found mostly around the Clintonville area; World Language Middle School, up and down E. Dominion and west of High Street along Olentangy Boulevard. Patrollers have been actively taking them down since last night. If you see one, take it down and please shoot us a DM about where you found it. Nazi Scum out of Ohio!"

I love you, UK pals, but sometimes it's a bit hard to take the UK seriously what do you mean a Wildlife Trust rents a bunch of islands from a historical Duchy for "rent of one daffodil per year"
Wikipedia screenshot from the page about the Isles of Scilly. It reads: A majority of the freehold land of the islands is the property of the Duchy of Cornwall, with a few exceptions, including much of Hugh Town on St Mary's, which was sold to the inhabitants in 1949. The duchy also holds 3,921 acres (1,587 hectares) as duchy property, part of the duchy's landholding. All the uninhabited islands, islets and rocks and much of the untenanted land on the inhabited islands is managed by the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, which leases these lands from the Duchy for the rent of one daffodil per year.

it's one thing when Google's AI can't adequately integrate other sources (they're all presumably in different unpredictable formats) but it's especially funny when Google AI can't integrate Google's own tools. Looking up a county in Western Ohio-- it's over an hour and a half away, not "9 minutes"
Google AI results for the search Auglaize County Ohio. It shows a map, a weather panel, a directions panel, and some quick facts that lists the county seat. The county is outlined in red on the map, clearly closer to Fort Wayne Indiana than Columbus Ohio, but the directions panel in the AI summary says it is 9 minute's drive from Columbus.
