Mrs Mac refers to Clovis (pictured) as The Little King. I started calling him Rex Mundi. When someone (finally) asked, I took the opportunity to say, "Because he ruins the first day of the working week." I'm healing now.

All cats have the same name, “NOOOOOOOOO!” They will ignore it just the same but will do so in such a way as to confirm that they recognise it and simply do not care.

Ours only respond to treats being shaken/the front door opening. One of my favourite cat anecdotes is from Marge Piercy, who had multiple cats. Apparently, none of them would respond to their name, but if one was called, the others would turn & look at them, while the first one basically shrugged.

Peter has recently left a tablet and two phone charging banks in the pocket of the seat in front on a plane. So he's programmed his phone to shout at him to remember his tablet and charger while playing ABBA loudly, when he takes it off airplane mode. It just did it on a Chilterns train. Humiliated.

My quick thoughts on Carter-Ruck and Amersi v SRA. How we got here, what it means, what should be done...
lawyerwatch.wordpress.com
Privilege in whose interest?
If the judge in Carter-Ruck and Amersi v. SRA (a shag marry avoid trio for the ages) had wanted to take the case in a different direction, he might have started off with a quote from the original litigation which is the subject of the complaint. In that case, the judge found: 240. Nevertheless, there are several aspects of the conduct of the Claimant – many of which…

I know I’m a broken record on this, but despite the gender stuff (though he did develop on this!) and his fondness for posing as grumpy old man, CS Lewis was a much more generous, imaginative, and in the best possible way weird writer than his conservative fans want him to be.

Naomi Alderman’s The Strangers should - if there’s justice - supplant The Power as the book she is most famous for. It goes straight into my book of the year contenders. My excitable review:

Naomi Alderman’s The Strangers is not just a good book, it’s a special one
Naomi Alderman is best known for The Power, which won the Women’s Prize. Her new novel is even better

That sounds great. I've often thought if we could start from scratch it would be ideal for undergraduate degrees to be somewhere between the specialized degree that I took all those years ago (still default in the UK, I think) and the much more dispersed US 4-year degree as at the place I work now.
