Come open one of the cupboards at Dr Johnson's House. This one was originally used to store wigs. Its size allowed a chair to be placed inside, meaning the wig-wearer could sit, close the doors behind them, and powder their wigs without a mess. This is where the term 'powder closet' comes from.
