AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

I love this painting my mum, Jo, inspired by a cottage I used to rent in Devon. It feels so utterly evocative of the place, and the time - the 1930s - when the place was almost certainly at its cultural peak. If you read this, you'll probably understand why: www.tom-cox.com/the-lion-the...
A painting, with echoes of cubism, inspired by the slightly gothic cottage where I lived in the grounds of Dartington Hall, Devon, from early 2014 to the end of 2017. (If you've read my books Ring The Hill and 21st-Century Yokel this place will probably feel quite familiar.)

Interested in late medieval witches? It's not too late to join sessions on the topic at the IMC2027, co-organised by a @hcaatedinburgh.bsky.social PhD student, Ana Inés Aldazabal.
Although the witch-hunt reached its peak in the early modern era, it was during the medieval period that the foundations were laid for the stereotype that would characterise witch trial records. In late medieval Europe, the idea emerged that an organised group of individuals led by the Devil sought to destroy the Christian community through maleficia. By allegedly attacking livestock, poisoning populations, spreading disease, and destroying crops, witches came to be perceived both as a collective threat and as a counter-community: an imagined parallel society with its own cult and culture, constructed as a negative reflection of Christendom. As witchcraft beliefs took hold, accusations and persecution became a means of reaffirming social boundaries. However, they could also have deeply disruptive effects on community life.

For this panel, we welcome proposals dealing with witchcraft in relation to communities during the Middle Ages. We encourage submissions from a variety of disciplines (art history, history, law, literature, religious studies, etc.) and contributions that foster interdisciplinary dialogue from researchers at any stage of their career
