Interested in late medieval witches? It's not too late to join sessions on the topic at the IMC2027, co-organised by a @hcaatedinburgh.bsky.social PhD student, Ana Inés Aldazabal.
Although the witch-hunt reached its peak in the early modern era, it was during the medieval period that the foundations were laid for the stereotype that would characterise witch trial records. In late medieval Europe, the idea emerged that an organised group of individuals led by the Devil sought to destroy the Christian community through maleficia. By allegedly attacking livestock, poisoning populations, spreading disease, and destroying crops, witches came to be perceived both as a collective threat and as a counter-community: an imagined parallel society with its own cult and culture, constructed as a negative reflection of Christendom. As witchcraft beliefs took hold, accusations and persecution became a means of reaffirming social boundaries. However, they could also have deeply disruptive effects on community life.

For this panel, we welcome proposals dealing with witchcraft in relation to communities during the Middle Ages. We encourage submissions from a variety of disciplines (art history, history, law, literature, religious studies, etc.) and contributions that foster interdisciplinary dialogue from researchers at any stage of their career

🚨New Series Alert! 🚨 Series editors Louise Blanke and Anja Slawisch and I are excited to launch Edinburgh Studies in Classical Archaeology, which is seeking proposals for new books! All the deets: edinburghuniversitypress.com/series-edinb... @edinburghup.bsky.social @hcaatedinburgh.bsky.social
Screenshot of a webpage titled Edinburgh Studies in Classical Archaeology, series edited by Louise Blanke and Anja Slawisch. The tagline reads: Original and innovative research anchored in the material culture of the Classical past. The main paragraph reads: This series serves as a leading hub for Classical Archaeology, broadly conceived, bridging traditional material studies and new developments in the wider field. It welcomes research on material culture across a wide geographical range—from the British Isles to North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean—and spanning the Iron Age through the end of the long Late Antiquity (c. 1000 BCE–1000 CE). The series publishes monographs and edited volumes that explore regions, settlements, and objects in context. Contributions employ state-of-the-art methodologies to investigate previously underexamined sites, regions, and materials, or to reframe well-known evidence through innovative approaches. By integrating specialist expertise from adjacent fields—including ancient history, philology, epigraphy, archaeobotany, archaeometry, and digital heritage—the series promotes a holistic understanding of ancient societies and their interaction with their environments. Individual volumes are richly illustrated with photographs, maps, and technical drawings, establishing the series as a key resource for future research.
