To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.

In the early US colonies, there were two sets of thought on disability. The one that came from the Puritans and Calvinists, which, shockingly (sarcasm), was the prejudicial “well why’d you make God so angry, huh”, and the one that most everybody else held, which was Shit Happens.

Lots of cultures believe(d) that disabled people are sacred or to be honored. Even “western” civilizations had respect. Was reminded that in the 1300s, it was believed that sick/poor people were considered closer to God. The plague changed that perception.
