Vredenburg: A Busy Street Without the Cars
Objectively, Vredenburg in Utrecht is a very busy street. And yet, when I give guided tours, some people keep telling me that I have no idea what a really busy street looks like. What do they mean? Probably that, in their mind, a street cannot be busy when it does not have private cars. There aren't any here now. But it wasn’t always like this.

Fascinating - the post-medieval dominance of the sheep is noted down thread - but worth remembering that in the 13th century, Edward I employed hundreds of foresters to accompany his armies. For the English, Wales was wooded - a 14th century chronicler talks of Welsh wild men from the woods.

Potentially a huge change which could deal with the significant problem of dangerous illegal e-motorbikes. It is a disgrace the food courier apps have been allowed to wash their hands of rider safety whilst trapping them in an exploitative precarious time-critical income model.

@yrieithydd.bsky.social how would you translate the inscription on this headstone (near that of our great-great-uncle). It doesn’t seem to be a direct quote from the Lord’s Prayer, but seems to be referencing “thy will be done” in some way, but I’m not sure of the exact sense
A headstone in Heilly Station Cemetery, Méricourt l’Abbé, Somme. It bears the names of Sapper RJ Parry, Royal Engineers; Private JG Taylor, Northumberland Fusliers and Serjeant Charles William Cole, King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Below Parry’s name is the inscription (in Welsh) “Dy ewyllys di a wneler”
