From today's copy: rural housing policy in a nutshell: 'The [parish] council was opposed to the building of starter homes in the village because there were no jobs for young people there. In 1993 there was a further debate about starter homes but no decision was made.'

Manchester City cheated Premier League rules, the Commission found. Did it also cheat HMRC? We've examined the decision and leaked Mancini documents. We think City likely failed to pay £12m in tax. There should be a criminal investigation. Thread:

1. #MedievalSky, grab a lifejacket and a seasickness bag, we’re casting off on a thread about the Norman invasion fleet in 1066! 960 years ago, the Normans landed at Pevensey and established a base at the Roman shore fort which was already succumbing to erosion from the sea on its south side. 1/20

A niche complaint (one genealogical followers will know this): five successive generations with the eldest son being called 'Walter', is one thing. Having one Walter marrying a woman (who married twice more), whose stepdaughter (from the third marriage), marry her grandson, also Walter, is another.

Next lunchtime talk: Monday 12th October, 1-2pm 📍 Kent History and Library Centre, #Maidstone 'Captain Swing in Kent, 1830-1831: Revolt and Repression' presented by Dr John Bulaitis. Reserve your free seat today: 📧 archives@kent.gov.uk ☎️ 03000 420 673 #WhatsOn #History #Kent
Shown here is a scene of a barn engulfed in flames. Reproduced from a postcard held in Kent Archives' Local History Reference Collection.

About the talk:
On Christmas Eve of 1830, a huge crowd assembled on Penenden Heath to witness the execution of William and Henry Packman, two young brothers from Blean (near Canterbury), and William Dyke, from Bearsted. The same day, seven prisoners were removed from Dover Town Gaol and taken to a convict ship for transportation to Australia.

The draconian sentences were part of attempts to repress a massive movement of agricultural labourers that was sweeping southern, eastern and central England. Known today as Captain Swing – the signature on menacing letters sent to farmers and landowners – the movement was a rebellion against poverty, unemployment, threshing machines and the workhouse. In this talk, John Bulaitis outlines events in Kent which were crucial in the genesis and evolution of the Swing revolt.

John Bulaitis' book, 'The Tithe War in England and Wales, 1881-1936', won the 2025 Joan Thirsk Memorial Prize for the best book on British and Irish rural history.

There's an element of cargo cult to this (cf. the repeated calls on 'Thatcher's Legacy', which - aged 45 - I'm a little hazy about in the specifics, but very clear that it is contested). Not fighting the last war, but the last but one or, maybe as many as three.
