Using Flourish, I built this interactive visualization that lets you explore the average daily number of cyclists counted by the automated counters in Helsinki by location, weather, and type of day (workday or not). public.flourish.studio/visualisatio...
An infographic titled “The number of cyclists passing Helsinki’s automated counters shows a lot of variation” that shows the average daily number of cyclists passing Helsinki’s automated counters in 2016–2025 on days that were moderate in temperature (average daily temperature between 6° and 16° Celsius) and had no rain, broken down by individual counter. There are 16 small line charts, with the charts for Pitkäsilta bridge and Kaivokatu showing a precipitous drop, Ratapihantie and Käpylä, Pohjoisbaana showing moderate growth, and the rest remaining flat or showing a moderate decline. The changes tend to be more pronounced work working days than non-working days.

It's true there are about 50 'bike counters' (they are called eco-counters) and that a cyclist can get counted multiple times on a trip, but most of the network does not have a bike counter, and they don't always count cyclists that go over them. We estimate 10-30% of the actual use is measured.

Got to cycle the new C55 arrangement today. Worked very well. Before, the narrow gate on the left is what everyone on foot and cycles had to share to get to Park Lane. Now, a lovely new stretch of two way cycle track through the gates. Better for everyone. Well done TRP & TFL @willnorman.co.uk
